As the owner of the Win CE-based DT 375, I’m rooting mightily for CE to hang around.
I’d like to see more choices in e-reading software and maybe even browsers, ideally running in pre-5.0 CE.
This new CE device from Compal is only a prototype, but Pocketables says it’s due to come out by year’s end.
Specs: 4.3-inch WVGA display, WiFi, Bluetooch
As summed up in Engadget, based on a Wired report and press release, here are the specs.
“Simply dubbed the UMD (Ultra Mobile Device), this ultraportable…featured a 532MHz Freescale i.MX31 processor, 512MB of NAND Flash memory, 256MB of DDR RAM, a 4.3-inch WVGA display, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, a slide out QWERTY keyboard, trackpad, hot keys, built-in speaker and microphone, a 1.3-megapixel CMOS camera, SIM card slot, and a miniSD slot to hold excess media.”
One negative—or positive, depending how you look at it: This gadget is also a Smartphone: bad news for those of us who want just the basics. Price is expected to be in the $400-$500 range.
XP vs. CE: Yes, CE lacks the power of XP, but at least this machine could be thriftier with batteries than an XP version.
