Amazon has already done a pretty good job of recruiting indie musicians to sell mp3s on amazon. (for a while, they were even letting singers distribute free mp3s).
What authors crave is the cachet of having a book page on amazon, plus access to audience tracking tools and comments. Unfortunately the road to self-publishing is fraught with lots of additional costs.
On the other hand, having a portion of free works would enhance the overall value of the platform.
