OpenSearchFox Here’s a cool tip for e-book lovers in search of the right titles, the right authors, the right anything—including information on non-e-book sites.

See the form near the upper right of your Firefox browser? You can select add-ons to let you key in a search word, click on the magnifying glass icon near the upper the right, and go directly to the popular destination sites such as Wikipedia.

OpenSearchFox to the rescue

But what if no add-on exists for the sites you like to search regularly? No problem. Just download OpenSearchFox and roll your own plugins. “Open the search webpage, right-click on the input field of keywords, and click Add OpenSearch plugin. All you have to do is click and click.”

So far OpenSearch has worked great not just with public domain sites but also with TeleRead’s search form on the right—meaning you can more easily use us as a database on e-books. Screen shot shows the view after I found the Gutenberg page listing George Gissing‘s works. I had to scroll down, by the way, and you may have to do this in other situations. Oh, and a reminder of the obvious: OpenSearch will almost surely work on library and commercial e-book sites, not just public domain ones.

  1. […] Thanks to Teleread, I just discovered this great plugin for Firefox: Open Search Fox. For those of you using Firefox, you should really consider installing this if you need to search for books on Feedbooks pretty often. Once you’ve installed the plugin, a simple right click on our search field will let you add our search as a quick search for Firefox. This way, even when you’re not visiting us, you can easily search for content available on our website. […]
