images-1.jpegAccording to an article in the Daily Yomiuri Online, a new project is starting to digitize the publications in the Nation Diet Library. In addition, there will be established a committee of government and industry to look into rights management issues and revenue distribution for the future digitization of books.

The Diet Library will be creating digital images of publications from 1868 to 1926, on which copyright has expired. Under a new law the Library can digitize publications for preservation without the copyright holders’ approval and currently plans to digitize about 900,000 volumes.
