  1. One question for all those software geeks out there…:-)

The Iliad sports a fully-fledged Wacom Penabled interface (as far as I know, but since Wacom actually mentioned this ina press-release I think it ought to be real..).
Now I was thinking…could the Iliad be used as a graphics-tablet? If someone could write an interface driver that routes the input information from the Wacom through thte USB interface to the PC/MAC, then it should be possible?
It might even be better than a normal Wacom tablet because you would be able to see what you are drawing on the (e)paper as well as on the computer screen.

Any opinions/ideas about this? I won’t be needing this function myself, but my girlfriend is a designer and she’s been thinking about buying a wacom tablet for some time now…so maybe she could then use my Iliad instead?

  2. I would just get a tablet and use it for that purpose; that way you’ll be able to actually get technical support (maybe) if you need it. It will also be significantly cheaper.

The Iliad is designed as a dedicated device; I doubt there is any simple way to connect the unit to a computer through USB and access the digitizer, and in any event would not be supported by IRex.

Right now anything to do with the Iliad is an unknown quantity; the devices aren’t shipping, and the poor level of communication IRex has displayed with people who want to buy a unit does not make me optimistic about the company.

  3. @Richard

I’m pretty sure iRex won’t get this kind of software going themselves. The user community out there however will…if there is enough interest that is…
According to what I see on the forums, interest in the iliad is pretty high even though it is very expensive and hard to get at the moment.

I’d say we’ll have to wait for the devices to start shipping and for the SDK to appear (SDK was targeted for July, but I don’t know whether it has been postponed) until we can truly evaluate the chances of this device.

I do think that the Graph-Tablet implementation i’m thinking about should be possible however. i’m no programmer, far from it, but routing the input information through the USB doesn’t sound too far-fetched to me.

  4. 2 Roland Rohde:
I think you can spoil Iliad’s screen by often using for drawing…
    Will be sad ((
Special device is better idea for your girlfriend and for your reader’ safety…

Make notes sometimes – is not the same like using it so intesive as wacom for designer…

  5. ah well…she wouldn’t be using it all the time…that’s why she hasn’t bought a wacom tablet yet anyway…^^

I’m not sure how the wear and tear would be, but I think you can scratch around on a glass surface with plastic for quite a while before it breaks…at least I hope so…and i’m planning on using a brando anyway as soon as I can get one…I simply LOVE Brando screen protectors…but this is all hypothetic anyway at the moment…let’s see when the device arrives…:-)

  6. iRex webshop open for all european mobileread members!

iRex contacted me and told me they would take individual orders from european customers if they acknowledge the fact that the software isn’t complete yet. The invite procedure is still in place, but you can get an invite easily by following the instructions in this thread:

    http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6927

enjoy! and remember…it’s for europeans only at the moment.
