Barnes & Noble [has] announced it is extending its popular digital children’s reading experience to iPad owners with the introduction of the NOOK kids for iPad application, available for free at www.NOOKkids.com/ipad and www.itunes.com/appstore. The new application makes the company’s expansive digital catalog of children’s content – including 100 new interactive kids’ books including Caps for Sale, Skippyjon Jones and Sheep in a Jeep – even more accessible to customers of all ages, bringing iPad owners the state-of-the-art children’s reading experience first available on NOOKcolor by Barnes & Noble.

+ Scholastic Uses Apps To Expand Reading Experience (via MediaBistro)

Yesterday [Tuesday] Scholastic launched a new line of interactive kids’ book apps for the iPad.

For Scholastic, both a publisher and distributor, apps help support their digital book collection. These apps are not digital versions of the books, but instead provide digital experiences to complement the print titles and have games based on the stories.

In addition, this year Scholastic is launching an eReader software and customers will be able to purchase eBooks to be read on this software through the Scholastic Book Clubs and the Scholastic Store. It will work across various platforms, such as personal computers, iPhones, iPads and Android devices. The software, which is slated for beta release this spring, will include thousands of children’s eBook titles. Some of the eBooks in the collection will include enhanced features such as animations, read along with functionality and music.
