Don’t. Kindle 2 is "not that near," according to a two-part video of an interview that the Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg just had with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. A summary from Engadget:

    "On Kindle 2: ‘There will be a second version, a third version, a tenth version. … but a second version is not that near.’

    "According to Bezos, on a title-by-title basis of the 125,000 titles available both in print and on Kindle, Kindle’s sales represent 6% of total sales. We have no idea how significant that actually is (or what that means in dollars), but Bezos seemed to be fairly impressed with that number. Still, ‘Books won’t go away just as horses won’t go away — they’re still around.’

    "Talking about whether the Kindle was built to work on non-CDMA networks (read: networks other than Sprint). Bezo said: "we’re gonna — we need to be thinking globally about the device, which we are." He almost slipped there and said "We’re gonna launch internationally," but caught himself.

Even if Bezos isn’t as sentimental as some people are about horses, maybe he can at least show more mercy toward publishers like Long Riders’ Guild Press in his POD dealings.

    1. If, Kindle sales represent 6% of Amazon’s book sales (assuming I read that right), that’s a lot. Sure, Kindle was bought by early adopters and later adopters will probably read less, but 6% is a lot bigger percentage than eBooks make in the commercial book world (and I’m sure Bezos isn’t counting people downloading Gutenberg books (or even Fictionwise books) on their Kindles.

      The lower price is certainly making me drool. I’m trying to justify this–not there yet but trying hard.

    2. I don’t believe that 6% sales figure for one frikkin second. Does anyone know if that 6% is really the number of ebook editions vs print editions that amazon stocks?

      I also don’t believe for a frikkin second there will be a second, third or even tenth version of the Kindle.

      amazon’s price cut is to stimulate sales of a dog product. If such a cut was *really* feasible, I think Sony would have done it with the Reader *first*.

    3. Based primarily on Kindle owner feedback, I’m definitely waiting for Kindle 2, even if it’s another year. The initial version seems to have too many warts.
