‘Courts Unlikely To Stop Google Book Copying’
September 5, 2005 | 3:14 am
By David Rothman
“Should the growing number of publishing groups, who oppose the plan by Google Inc. to digitize the collections of some of the world’s major libraries, fail to reach an agreement and turn instead to the courts, they may have a tough road ahead of them. Although Google may appear to violate the law by scanning, without permission, entire copies of books protected by copyright, such an act is not illegal if it is considered ‘fair use’ of the material.” – InternetWeek. May IW be right! Best of luck to Google in protecting the publishers from themselves. Google’s plan on the whole will be good for book sales. Remember, Google is copying the books to facilitate searching of them, and that’s different from pirating them.

What I resent is that Ibought a Gemstar S book. As you know, it was pre-historic and I couldn’t even buy books. I have worked on Project Gutenburg and started reading bookson my laptop unweildy and went to the library or bought them from alibris, Barnes and Noble or Amazon. I think your thesis is well worth it. Another reason isthat I’ve discovered new (to me) authors and bought thebook, especially the Classics.
