Since the tag for this story is “e-book hype” and since the next generation of ebook readers is experiencing quasi-eternal delays I offer the following article and link entitled The last book. The article is dated 1997 and it appeared in the IBM Systems Journal. The groundbreaking technology described is working well in the lab at MIT and it is just about to revolutionize the world of electronic books. What is this technology called? E-ink. Sometimes an overnight sensation actually takes nine-years to be adequately realized.
(Warning: This text is for the purposes of levity only. No disrespect for the developers of e-ink is intended. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery while reading this text. Do not take internally.)
Yup, Real Soon Now(tm).
The frustrating thing about The Last Book is that the MIT folks are no dummies. What’s more, if memory serves, Joe Jacobson is involved with E Ink. So at least the guy followed through. Anyway, big thanks, Garson, for reminding us not to be too smug. – David
