An Android-based iPod Touch substitute is hard to find
April 29, 2011 | 10:13 am

ARCHOS_32_it_3-4I’ve greatly enjoyed the two 1st-generation iPod Touch pocket-sized media/Internet devices I’ve had over the last few years, and have had my eyes on the 4th-generation iPod Touch for some little while. I’ve been thinking that, come the fall, I might upgrade to a 4th-gen model when the 5th-gen iPod Touch comes out and drives refurb prices down. From a features perspective, the iPod Touch has just about everything I could want: a high-quality, highly-sensitive touchscreen, excellent e-book reading capability (even without iBooks available on the 1st-generation model, I’ve got Stanza so I have no complaints there), great...

Is an Amazon Android tablet in the offing?
April 21, 2011 | 9:18 pm

14304-android_amazon_superPeter Rojas has a post at gdgt.com laying out why he thinks Amazon is building an Android tablet and Samsung is building it. His reasoning basically comes down to that, considering Amazon’s expansions into an Android app store and multimedia/cloud services, it makes sense to come out with a device made to use with those the way the Kindle was made to use with e-books. It could also compete with B&N’s Nook Color, which has reportedly been selling pretty well so far. On ReadWriteWeb, Sarah Perez takes a look at Rojas’s reasoning, noting that he is a seasoned tech...

Samsung acquired Liquavista? Looks like it
January 19, 2011 | 4:51 am

From E-Ink-Info: There are reports that Samsung has acquired Liquavista. It's not official, and we do not know the financial details, but it seems that Samsung is already listed as Liquavista's corporate parent at the Netherlands' chamber of commerce. LiquaVista raised $9.5 million in early 2010, so this doesn't seem to be an "emergency sale" - and is probably good news for the company and the technology. We also know that Samsung stopped making E Ink panels in August 2010 - so perhaps they were already considering the move to Liquavista's electrowetting displays. Here's an interview we conducted with Liquavista's CTO back...

The Register reviews the Samsung E60: it gets 50%
September 30, 2010 | 8:29 am

e60_2.jpgThe reviewer says that the unit is as thick, slow, needs a stylus for everything - including navigating your digital library and says that it reminds him of his Newton. Samsung could have produced a simple, slim gadget to display e-books, but instead it over-engineered the E60 in a bid to beat the opposition. The result is a chunky, clunky device the looks backward rather than forward and is expensive too. Two or three years ago, it would have been great. Now it just grates. WHSmith is selling the E60 online for £199....

Video of Samsung Galaxy Tab by Jason Davis
September 20, 2010 | 9:24 am

Jason Davis has a video of the Samsung Galaxy Tab. You can read his hands-on article here. His verdict: This is the best tablet other than the iPad. Having said that, it’s definitely in second place, but Android’s more open nature can only help. Needs to be priced at under $A500 to compete in Australia. ...

Report on Samsung Galaxy Tab press event – unit will NOT have phone functionality in US – will be a hit!
September 17, 2010 | 12:32 am

P9160322.JPGBottom line? The Tab will be a real contender in the "small" end of the tablet market. It looks nice, feels nice, is fast, has a great display, does Flash and, even without the phone functionality, will have access to the Android Market, and will come with Android 2.2. A WiFi-only version will be available later this year. Pricing: Samsung, like with the Galaxy S, refused to comment on pricing. "Its a carrier decision." Like the Galaxy S, the Tab will be available through AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile. I recorded the presentation for you. I...

Galaxy Tab press conference tonight

Samsung Galaxy Tab prices are insane – at least in the UK
September 15, 2010 | 12:54 pm

SamsungGalaxyTab_thumb.jpgTech Radar is reporting that Amazon UK is putting the Galaxy Tab up for sale at £799 and Clove are listing it as £615. By contrast, the 64GB iPad is selling for £699. Evidently this isn't a rumor, because Tech Radar says: "... Samsung confirmed to TechRadar recently that the post £600 price point is indeed genuine, although it may change before launch". Very disappointing. I don't see any way the Tab can compete with an iPad that has better overall specs. One has to hope for a carrier subsidy - but even that may be a problem. ...

Thursday is Galaxy Tab day!
September 14, 2010 | 11:27 am

Galaxy-tab.jpgActually, Thursday evening at 6:30 pm EST. TeleRead's been invited to attend the "preview" of the Galaxy Tab by Samsung in New York. I'll be there and let you know what I find out. I'm really, really interested in getting my hands on this thing....

Google says that Android is not yet designed for tablets; be careful what you buy
September 10, 2010 | 10:21 am

images.jpgImportant news from Google. The say that the current version of Android is not designed for tablets. This means that only a few of the new tablets coming to market will be able to access the Android market. Be careful of what you buy right now! Here's the info from Liliputing: The problem is that Google hasn’t officially given these devices its blessing yet — and Google mobile director Hugo Barra tells Tech Radar that the company probably won’t until a future version of Android that’s optimized for tablets is available. In other words, that shiny new...
