Diane Duane runs 60%-off Pancake Tuesday e-book sale
March 3, 2014 | 7:28 pm

pancake-bunnyAs I’ve mentioned before, Diane Duane is one of those very few authors who runs her own e-book store for her and her husband’s books, rather than relying on the big-name stores. She just informed me that she is running a 60%-off sale on her e-book store in honor of Pancake Tuesday. Use the coupon code PANCAKES at checkout to get a discount on all of Duane’s DRM-free, multi-format e-books, including the complete 9-volume set of the revised Young Wizards New Millennium Editions. The sale ends at 23:59 Hawaiian time on Wednesday March 5th, which is 4:59 a.m....

Amazon ranked #1 in customer satisfaction again; knocks $30 off Fire tablets to celebrate
January 9, 2014 | 3:13 pm

In honor of being ranked #1 in customer satisfaction during the holiday shopping season for the 9th year in a row by the ForeSee Experience Index, Amazon has announced it is knocking $30 off all Kindle Fire tablets until 11:59 p.m. Pacific time, January 11th. That would knock the base model 7” Kindle Fire HD down to $109, the 7” HDX (with the new Mayday Button) or the 8.9” HD down to $199, and the 8.9” HDX down to $349. Not bad pricing, all in all, if that’s what you’re looking for in a tablet. To take advantage of...

Office Max store closings offer bargain tablet, e-reader opportunities
December 22, 2013 | 7:35 am

CAM00515[Bumped due to factual correction.] Looking for a good tablet bargain? Check out your local Office Max or Office Depot store—it’s possible you might find one that’s going out of business. Offices Max and Depot merged this year, and my local Office Max store is closing. (Probably because it’s right down the street from an Office Depot.) An employee at the store told me this closure was due to the merger. I have since been contacted by a representative of Office Depot who said that no closures have been announced and any closures are “part of the...

Amazon Kindle with Special Offers: $49, today only
December 17, 2013 | 2:59 pm

Amazon is running a sale today (12/17) on its Kindle with Special Offers. This is the basic model, with the arrow buttons rather than a touch screen. It’s normally $69, but Amazon’s got it on sale for $49, today only. Free shipping, non-refurbished. So, if you don’t mind a little non-intrusive advertising, and supporting an evil empire in its continued domination of the e-book industry, it would make a great gift for that friend who likes to read but doesn’t have an e-reader yet. Or, for that matter, for yourself. Needless to say, you can sideload any DRM-free MOBI...

Deal alert! 2013 Nexus 7 tablets, $40-$50 off
December 12, 2013 | 7:30 pm

Here’s a great deal on the 2013 Nexus 7. Office Depot has the 16 GB version for $180, $50 off list (sold out online; in-store pickup only), and the 32 GB version for $230, $40 off the $270 list (currently available both on-line and in-store). Sale ends 12/21. Of course, sales tax will apply to those purchases if you’re in a state where Office Depot has stores. (Amazon at one point listed the 32 GB 7 for $239 with free shipping, which would be better than $230 + tax, but the price and stock seem to fluctuate throughout the day...

Barnes & Noble puts e-readers, Nook HD tablet on sale
September 24, 2013 | 9:15 am

new-barnes-and-noble-nook-HDSpeaking of Barnes & Noble sales, Nate Hoffelder at The Digital Reader points out that B&N is running a more general sale on its Nook hardware, this week only. The Nook Simple Touch is $20 off, as I already mentioned, but so is the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, now $80 instead of $100. And the Nook HD has been knocked down to $110 or $130 for its 8GB and 16GB versions, respectively. The Nook HD in particular is worth a look. I’m enjoying my $90 refurbished unit immensely since I rooted it with CyanogenMod. (I’ll write about my...

Refurbished Nook Simple Touch: $40 on eBay
September 24, 2013 | 4:48 am

If you’re looking for a good cheap e-reader, an eBay seller is running a $40 with free shipping special on refurbished Nook Simple Touch units. This is B&N’s 2011 model, a 6” 800x600 unlit Pearl e-ink reader that can do EPUB, including Barnes & Noble’s and Adobe Digital Editions’ DRM. It has 2 GB of onboard storage, plus an SD card slot for loading more media. If you’re invested in Barnes & Noble’s content ecosystem (for example, you have a lot of e-books from eReader/Fictionwise that got imported to B&N after it shut those stores down), or just want something...

Expired: Infinite Jest was $1.99 on Kindle July 4th
July 4, 2013 | 6:16 pm

My Kindle-with-special-offers just informed me that David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest is on sale for $1.99 today in Kindle format. I wouldn’t be inclined to report every $1.99 book I came across (unless it was one I really liked), but it was just a couple of weeks ago I had occasion to post about this one, so the synchronicity struck me as amusing. Other than my post, we previously mentioned this over-1,000-page doorstopper here and here. At $1.99, that’s less than a fifth of a cent per page—and you won’t even have to cut the page numbers off with a bandsaw! Learning...
