Kindle DX only $200 on Woot – Update: Sold out!
December 31, 2011 | 9:51 am

Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device with Free 3GwtjStandard The Kindle DX, Amazon's large-sized ereader, is available on Woot today for $200.  It's refurbished, but carries a full warranty.  The unit has free 3G, but no WiFi. The DX has become my favorite ereader because of its large-sized screen.  It's also much lighter and thinner than my iPad and so you can get the large screen in a much more convenient factor.  Additionally, it makes a great PDF reader.  All my various PDF manuals now reside on the unit....

Kindle DX on Woot for $200!
December 22, 2011 | 12:52 pm

I'm late in my daily Woot lookup, but when I went to the site I saw this.  This is a great buy.  I picked up my DX at an earlier Amazon sale and it has become my favorite ereader.  Something about the large size screen makes it a pleasure to read on.   Also it is thin and light, unlike my iPad, so it is easy to hold.  It has a 9.7" screen and 3G (no WiFi). Amazon is still selling it at $380. It makes a fantastic PDF reader and I've put all my PDF manuals on it for easy...

Kindle DX reduced $120 to $259
November 25, 2011 | 10:42 am

I suspect this is the end for the DX.  If you look at Amazon's "Kindle" page you will see all the other Kindles listed, but not the DX.  The DX is only listed on the sale page.   No mention at all in the regular Kindle pages.  The offer ends on November 28. I've ordered one and will ket you know what I think.  ...

Kindle software update v2.5.7 ready for Kindle 2, DX and DXG
January 8, 2011 | 10:11 am

amazonkindle.png AMAZON HAS PLACED A SOFTWARE UPDATE ON THE SERVERS TONIGHT for all Kindles earlier than the Kindle-3 model but later than the Kindle 1, and it further refines the large update last summer which introduced Collections ('virtual folders" or category "tags") plus Pan & Zoom and several other features. This would be primarily a performance enhancement or maintenance update, as they have recommended this update privately to Kindle owners who reported a glitch or two at times, Amazon is now making it available for download if you want to get it earlier than you would...

Amazon still selling refurbished 2nd-gen Kindles
September 9, 2010 | 8:15 am

kindle2a[1] On CNet’s “Crave” gadget blog, David Carnoy points out that Amazon is still stocking “refurbished” units (possibly just leftover new units) of the 2nd-generation Kindle and Kindle DX at $159.99 and $289.99 each. The question is, whether these units are worth the price. There is only $40 of difference between that refurbished 2nd-gen and a new 3rd-gen device, and the screen improvements are probably worth that. And the model with the better screen and wifi only is $20 cheaper. The price difference between the older and newer $359 DX is a bit higher at $70, but again...

More tips on using the Kindle 3; making Kindle 3 text like that on the Kindle DX
September 7, 2010 | 7:25 am

Be sure to read the first Kindle 3 Tips and Cautions blog article here. The picture on the left is of my white-bezeled 6" Kindle 3 next to the Graphite 9.7" Kindle DX. The Graphite DX does have a slightly greener tint under certain lighting, but a touch of green can make an image look brighter. Here's the larger image.  Following the larger version is a second, closer shot of the text of both. Further on down the page, I have a tip to get the Kindle text to a closer match with the DX...

Macworld reviews the Kindle DX Graphite
August 3, 2010 | 12:07 pm

567657_g1.jpgAnd they quite like it , too. It gets 4 out of 5 mice. Here's a snippet: What a difference a display can make All it took was turning on the $380 Amazon Kindle DX (Graphite) second-generation large-format e-reader to see that Amazon’s claims of a higher-contrast display than its predecessor were true. The E-Ink display indeed reflects a significant improvement in contrast, as evidenced by the clarity of the crisp text, and the darker blacks of graphics and words alike. The blacks, in fact, truly look black; by comparison, the blacks on the original Kindle DX appear dingy and...

Laptop reviews the Kindle DX (2010)
July 23, 2010 | 7:15 am

amazonkindledx_15g.jpg Laptop has a multi-page review of the new DX. They like it, but don't feel that it has a robust enough feature set for students. Interestingly, they have a comment on screen that I haven't seen before: Looking at the cover of N. K. Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms on both devices, the DX's version was definitely darker, but appeared muddier to our eyes rather than having better contrast....

If you’ve read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, played Portal, or watched Futurama, you will likely be interested. If not, carry on. Photo comparison of new Graphite DX vs a good older DX
July 10, 2010 | 10:59 am

dxsdiff1a.jpg New Graphite DX alongside Older White DX This photo is from the Amazon's Customer Images area and is taken by D. Meador. Here's a link to the specific image which is 130k in size. I had to make it smaller for the blog and for the loading time of the Kindle Edition of this blog. It's a good illustration of the subtle differences in background lightness being more evident when you can see where the lighter aspects come through in a much more intense way, as in the white that you can see within the dark area of the...
