Kindle 4 update 4.1.1 available
January 25, 2013 | 9:31 am

If you have a Kindle 4 (that's the one with the hardware controller and no keyboard), Amazon just released an software update. I don't have a Kindle 4, so I haven't been able to test it out. There are no release notes, and the folks on Kindleboards are saying it downloads very quickly, leading them to believe that it's just a patch. Have any of you downloaded and tried it out? Notice anything different? * * * I just tried the update myself, and didn't run into any trouble. Couple of things I should probably point out, though, especially for anyone who's not really...

Kindle Tip: Small text on web page when using Kindle Fire or Kindle e-Ink readers – How to read it
July 16, 2012 | 8:11 am

Images From Andrys Basten's A Kindle World Blog: Recently, a family member recently told me he was frustrated by trying to read webpages with tiny fonts, and I saw a Kindle news blog saying not much had been done to improve the Kindle Fire. I replied that the new Kindle Fire feature, Reading View for web-article reading that isolates the article, is done VERY well, and it’s brought me back to Amazon's Silk browser from Dolphin HD (Android) web browers which I had far preferred until Amazon’s Reading View feature was added to its Silk browser.   The new feature makes a huge difference...

Close, but not yet perfect: my review of the Kindle 4
November 14, 2011 | 9:02 am

Index I have been a Kindle user for its last three incarnations: I bought a K2 to replace my Sony reader because I wanted to use the text to speech feature and I wanted support for multilingual dictionaries, then when my visiting aunt expressed interest, I sold it to her bought the K3. I was happy with it, and when the K4 came out, I was only mildly tempted---until this same dear aunt visited again and told the sordid tale of a husband who stole the K3 out from under her, registered it to his own account and left her reader-less...

Amazon allows unsubscribing to special offers on the Kindle 4, but not 3 yet
October 6, 2011 | 9:15 am

MobileRead user jswinden discovered yesterday that Amazon has enabled unsubscribing to Special Offers by paying the difference between retail prices of the Special Offers version and the ad-free version of the device. To unsubscribe, go to your Amazon Manage Your Kindle / Manage Your Devices web page. In the Subscribe column, click Edit next to your K4 SO. Follow the instructions on the screen that displays. You will be charged $30, which is the amount you received as a discount for buying a K4 SO model. Apparently this option is not available...

The 10 biggest surprises about Amazon’s new Kindles
October 3, 2011 | 9:28 am

New Amazon Kindle Touch web browser surprise Beyond Black Friday has a post worth reading today:   There’s been some unexpected discoveries in the details about Amazon’s four newest Kindles. I’ve tried to identify the 10 biggest surprises in the list below — starting with five bad surprises, and then five good. 1. There’s No 3G Web Browsing (except on Kindle Fire) “Browsing available only in Wi-Fi mode,” reads the incriminating words on the 3G version of the Kindle Touch. Reportedly over the weekend some Amazon customer service reps incorrectly told customers they could still use Amazon’s 3G network access for web browsing on the...

Kindle 4 uses free AT&T wifi
September 29, 2011 | 10:52 am

KT td V166744020 I just ordered a low end Kindle 4, for delivery tomorrow, because I wanted to see how these "special offers" work. I also wanted a spare, small unit to carry around on those times where electronics are subject to the chance of breakage. It's interesting that Amazon's new pricing turns this into a purely impulse purchase. In checking out the features on the new unit I came across this: Free Access at AT&T Hotspots Enjoy free Wi-Fi access at AT&T hotspots across the U.S. for shopping and downloading Kindle content — no AT&T registration, sign-in, or password required. Amazon is looking...

September 29, 2011 | 8:59 am

K4nt sw v401The Kindle No-Touch/No Keyboard $79-$109 Model is available right away and here's a software update for it already Software v4.0.1 update for the Kindle 4 NoTouch/NoKeyboard model is already ready for download as an option.  What it does is allow you to have e-Ink refreshes on every page, as the default is to not have it refresh on each page. Both the Nook and Kobo Touch devices do not have e-Ink refreshes (aka black flash page-turn) on each page.  While that can be nice, others have found that the less frequent black flashes...
