John Grisham testified for his friend who downloaded kiddie porn: Reports
October 17, 2014 | 10:25 am

Grisham.jpegIn the wake of the coverage of John Grisham's comments around lighter sentences for consumers of child pornography, as well as Grisham's own public apology, we have had some commentary "in defense of John Grisham," insisting that "the invective he’s receiving right now is both misinformed and wildly over the top," and asking that his remarks be put into context - of his work on criminal justice reform, on racial parity in sentencing, and age of consent laws in the U.S., etc. Well, here is some more context. The Daily Telegraph, not slow to follow up on the scandal it facilitated in...

John Grisham speaks out – for pedophiles?
October 16, 2014 | 12:25 pm

johngrisham.jpgJohn Grisham, hawklike legal eagle, millionaire bestselling author, spokesperson for middle-aged white pedophiles ... oops. How did that one slip through the publicist's net? Through Grisham's own mouth, it seems, relayed via the UK's Daily Telegraph in an interview taped for your enjoyment and judicial edification. And the legal opinions vouchsafed therein are interesting to say the least... Grisham complains about the harsh sentences meted out to consumers of pornography, even child pornography, and bemoans the fact that: "we have prisons now filled with guys my age, 60-year-old white men in prison who've never harmed anybody, would never touch a child, but...

Rich boys club buys space to say Amazon is bad
August 8, 2014 | 4:25 pm

The open letter against Amazon from Authors United, the group steered by founding author Douglas Preston, seems to be getting a lot of column inches. And just to make sure, Authors United is buying its own. That is, a full-page ad in the Sunday edition of the New York Times to get the message across. Yes, authors are paying publishers (in this case, a newspaper publisher) to print their words - but no one seems to be crying "vanity press" this time round. (Well, maybe "vanity," but of that, see more below...) Evidently the grating irony of authors - those proverbial...

Need Library E-Books to Feed Your New Gadget? Here’s the Answer
January 1, 2013 | 9:15 am

If you can’t find the right library e-books for your new Kindle, Nook, iPad or other gizmo, you’re not alone. More than 100 patrons of the District of Columbia Public Library were lined up electronically today for 10 e-book copies of The Racketeer, John Grisham’s new novel about the murder of a federal judge. Some 400+ D.C. library users awaited 60 electronic copies of Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, the best-selling fiction title on the New York Times list. And a digital version of The Casual Vacancy, by J.K. Rowling, was not even in the catalog of the D.C. public library system. Could a well-stocked national digital library system—in...

Ebooks push sales of new John Grisham book
November 9, 2010 | 10:30 am

images.jpegThe NY Times is reporting that ebook sales of John Grisham's new book The Confession were about one-third of week-one hardcover sales, or about 70,000. Hardcover sales of the book are lower than that of his previous book, The Associate: 160,000 vs. 223,000, and ebook sales pushed the total for the new book ahead of the old. "The e-book sales are astonishing," said Mr. Grisham in an interview. "Would anybody have thought that a year ago? The future has arrived, and we're looking at it." According to the article, Grisham has opposed ebooks, feeling that they would hurt his sales at independent bookstores,...

john-grisham Another long-standing e-book holdout has finally given in. All 23 novels by popular suspense novelist John Grisham are now available in electronic form via Random House, only 14 months after the initial announcement. On Amazon, new Grisham titles are $9.99, with older titles at $7.99 or less. They are also at Barnes & Noble, and presumably other places as well. Who...
