Morning Roundup: iPad Mini refurbs available. Is Amazon KDP MFN legal?
April 18, 2014 | 9:00 am

iPad Mini refurbsiPad Mini Refurbs Now Available from Apple – Including Retina (The Digital Reader) Want to buy an iPad Mini but found them just too expensive? I have some good news for you. You can now pick up Apple’s iPad Mini Retina for about 16% off. That’s not a great discount, no, but it is about as good as you will get from Apple. *** Is the Kindle Direct Program MFN Legal? (Go To Hellman) If you sell an ebook through the Kindle Direct program, Amazon doesn't want you to offer it for less somewhere else. It's easy to understand why; if you're a consumer, you hate to pay...

Test Run: iPad Mini vs iPad Air
March 13, 2014 | 12:35 pm

ipad mini vs ipad airThe one technology purchase I regret is my iPad Mini. I wanted something lighter than my aging iPad 2; the iPad Air was not out yet, and I thought the Mini, with its ebook reader-sized screen, was the one for me. Now that the Air is out---roughly the same weight, but with a proper-sized screen---I have pondered selling the lot of it and upgrading to the iPad Air. But the price! That sucker is expensive! So I figured I would truck along with what I had and delay the decision as long as possible. And that is still my plan. But...

Do You Have Gadget Regret?
November 19, 2013 | 5:18 pm

gadget regretThe iPad Air has me regretting my Mini a little. When I got the Mini, I was in search of the lightest and smallest Apple tablet I could get. Now that the Air is out though, I am reconsidering. A full-size tablet, but with the Mini's weight? That is compelling to me. I am not in such a hurry to jump ship though, because experience has taught me that something better will come along someday, and I have made the mistake too often of adopting early and then being sorry later. The iPad is the perfect example. When the Mini came out,...

iPad Mini With Retina Display Available Now. Until They Sell Out
November 12, 2013 | 10:44 am

ipad mini with retina displayI hadn't expected them this early, but the new iPad Mini with Retina Display is on sale now. I don't expect them to stay in stock long, however, so if you've been waiting for one, hop on over and get it now, while you still can. With all the reports over the year with supply chain problems for the new screen (including this latest report), we've got to expect that supplies are limited. Assuming you can get one, they do look like great tablets. With the same processor as the iPad Air and a slightly smaller form factor, it's going to be...

Want a New Tablet With Free Data and No Up-Front Cost? T-Mobile Has It
October 25, 2013 | 3:46 pm

t-mobileT-Mobile is adding a tempting offer. Free data (up to 200MB a month) and the ability to purchase select tablets on a two-year installment plan with no money down. So, want a new iPad Mini but don't want a big bill up front? No problem. You'd pay $22.08 a month ($529.92 total) and have an LTE-equipped device with no monthly data plan. Sound too good to be true? Check it out. I generally advise against purchasing cellular-equipped tablets, especially for users in large metropolitan areas. Free public WiFi is easy enough to find, and for those occasions you can't find a public...

iPad Air and Updated iPad mini
October 22, 2013 | 4:23 pm

ipadSo earlier this year, I wrote a post on iPad rumors and made a couple of (mostly) tongue-in-cheek predictions. Now that we've had Apple's latest iPad event, shall we see how I did? iPad Predictions "I think we can definitely state that we will see a new iPad sometime later this year, probably before the Christmas shopping season." I also predicted that it would be slimmer, lighter, have the iPad Mini style bezel and a faster processor. Score all for me. The new iPad Air certainly covers all of those. It's got a pretty nice feature set, including a thinner, slimmer design that reduces...

Latest IDC tablet figures cast doubt on iPad future
August 6, 2013 | 10:36 am

It may be a little early to start writing off Apple as the next fading titan a la Microsoft or Nokia, but the latest tablet sales report from the International Data Corporation confirm the impression that it's not all sunshine and apple blossom right now in Cupertino. The latest issue of IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker shows the first recent quarter-on-quarter decline in worldwide tablet shipments, "as total volumes fell -9.7% from 1Q13. However, the 45.1 million units shipped in the second quarter was up 59.6% from the same quarter in 2012, when tablet vendors shipped 28.3 million devices." That three-monthly decline...

Which iPad Mini Rumor To Believe? Maybe Both
August 1, 2013 | 9:38 pm

iPad MiniI love watching dueling rumors. We’ll see an iPad mini with Retina display before the end of the year. No, we’ll see one more mini with the normal display, but a faster processor. Actually, what’s interesting about these two articles is that, if you dig a bit deeper and pay attention, they might actually be saying the same thing. While the headline for The Next Web piece says, “Apple will reportedly use retina display from Samsung for its next iPad Mini to be launched in Q4,” let’s do that digging I mentioned. First quote from the Next Web Article: "Apple suppliers in Asia are working on...

Accessory Review: Snugg iPad 4 Executive Case Cover and Flip Stand
July 29, 2013 | 7:29 pm

[easyazon-image align="right" asin="B007BZOGLG" locale="us" height="160" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/513p2QfXaYL._SL160_.jpg" width="160"] Snugg contacted me last week about sending me one of their cases to review, and I just received it today. It's not the type of case I prefer (I don't like cases that cover the bevel), so I won't be using it, but I think my husband will like it just fine. I tested it on an iPad 4, but it should fit the iPad 2 and 3 just fine as well. The product description claims the case is leather, but it's really synthetic leather, which isn't a surprise considering the price. However, it feels...

Tablet versus Notebook: The Battle Rages On
July 29, 2013 | 8:41 am

tabletAn article from Business Insider titled "Why I Sold my iPad" came to my in-box at a timely moment. I've been starting some research into the current computer scene because I plan to replace my five-year-old Macbook at Christmas, and I have been wresting with some of the same questions as the article's author, Steve Kovach. The difference is, he and I have wound up on opposite ends of the same conclusion: He gave up his iPad because he finds he can use his laptop for most of his work just as conveniently, and I am contemplating a lesser 'main' computer because...

Apple Facing Retina Display Shortage, Might Have To Delay iPad Mini 2 Launch
July 15, 2013 | 2:56 pm

iPad Mini 2Since Apple’s first mid-sized, mid-range tablet has proven to be such a booming success, no one really doubted an iPad Mini 2 coming sooner or later. But the exact ETA of this new slate has always been the big question mark. (Well, that ... and the specs and the pricing, of course.) Unfortunately for us (and fortunately for the tech giant), Cupertino has managed to keep a very tight lid on iPad Mini 2-related rumors, so here we are, eight months after the first-gen’s release, with nothing of substance known about the follow-up. And by “known,” I mean intel revealed by...

A round-up of iPad rumors
June 18, 2013 | 11:45 am

iPad rumorsIt's that time of year again. Apple's WWDC went by with no new iPad or iPad mini announcement, so the tech blogosphere goes wild. Because apparently they have nothing better to do with their time than report on iPad rumors (or second-gen Nexus 7 rumors or Nokia phablet rumors, or ... well you get the idea). I thought you might appreciate (or be amused by) a quick roundup, with commentary, on the rumors I've found. Earlier this year, at least one "inside source" reported that the next generation iPad would be released in March of this year. Oops. Scratch that one. How about...

Is Media Becoming Too Device-Dependent?
June 10, 2013 | 1:12 pm

media A great write-up at Media Shift asks an important question: Is media becoming too device-dependent? Speaking of the surge in Hearst Media subscriptions following the launch of the purse-sized iPad mini, they concede that "new formats drive new business models," and while this is not necessarily a bad thing, they also admit that retooling is expensive, and publishers "can easily spend too heavily just trying to keep up." And it's not just media companies, either; my write-up on the forthcoming Google Play for Education initiative highlights the same fallacy. Google can build the best 'app store' in the business, but a school like...

Acer Unveils Iconia A1 Tablet, an Excellent iPad mini Alternate
May 4, 2013 | 6:00 pm

Iconia A1 TabletA few days ago we caught a few leaked images of Acer’s updated mini tablet, the Iconia A1. A next-generation of Acer's Iconia B1, the “One-Handed” device features a brilliant 7.9-inch IPS display, arguably better specs, and clearly a better price-point than Apple’s latest iPad mini. If you’re in the market for an ultra-portable slate, this should be on your list of items to scout, especially now with official pricing and availability information announced. Specs-wise, our report from the other day was majorly on-point. Acer‘s Iconia A1 (A1-810) will pack a quad-core 1.7GHz MediaTek processor, an advertised seven-hour battery life, micro-HDMI input, a microSD card...

When’s the Best Time to Buy an Apple Product? (Infographic)
March 27, 2013 | 12:25 pm

AppleWhen is the best time to purchase a new Apple device? Is there a best time? We’re fully aware of how sporadic and paltry the big Apple can be when it comes to offering customers discounts on their products. Usually feeling like you’ve earned a ‘deal’ from an Apple retail store or from their online store involves taking advantage of a promotion, which can result in spending extra money to receive reduced priced accessories or services (of which you may or may not actually need). But saving any amount on a fresh Macbook Pro or iPad straight from the source? Not likely. So...

Refurbished iPad Minis Once Again Available from Apple Store, Starting at $299
March 26, 2013 | 1:38 pm

iPad MiniThe iPad mini looked like a bit of a gamble for Apple at first, but you don’t get to Cupertino’s dominant position over the tablet market without taking some risks, do you? And this one seems to have paid off rather nicely, as a second-gen 7.9-incher is allegedly in the works already. Meanwhile, if you’re one of those folks living in the shadows and scouring the Internet for the best deals on the most awesome gadgets, you should know that an assortment of refurbished iPad minis are again available via Apple’s U.S. Store. The tabs are not exactly dirt-cheap, but they offer...

Apple Offering Refurbished iPad 4 and iPad Mini
March 16, 2013 | 1:10 pm

iPadBeen wanting a 4th generation iPad or an iPad Mini but not ready to fork over that much money? Well, you’re in luck because Apple is now offering refurbished models of their latest releases at discounts of six to 10 percent. No, that’s not a huge savings, but with Apple products, a little is about the best you can expect. As with all refurbished options, you might not find exactly what you want available, but you’ve been patient until now, so you can probably afford to be patient and check back until your configuration is available. For example, when I checked a few...
