REVIEW: iPad Mini
December 29, 2012 | 9:30 pm

I posted earlier this year about my first impressions of the iPad Mini, and since then, I've remained on the fence about whether or not I would get one. I use my devices so much, and I really welcomed something smaller and lighter and nimbler. On the other hand, the price point horrified me a little, and I was having trouble justifying the purchase. Then I got a gift card to a mall I wouldn't otherwise shop at, and it was time to cash in the tech jar, and there was nothing else I especially wanted... ...and so I bit. And after two...

My iPad 3 is on the way and why I chose it
March 7, 2012 | 5:55 pm

Images Well, I actually was able to connect to the Apple servers and order an iPad 3.  Delivery is supposed to be on March 16.  When I get it I will post some comparison pictures of ebook text with the Kindle app - comparing the clarity of the text in iPad versions 2 and 3.  I'll also put it under my microscope and give you some real close-up shots of what's going on with the new Retina display. I ordered the 32G, Verizon LTE version.  Why?  For a couple of reasons.  Currently I have the 16G iPad 2 and I'm running out...

Apple will not kill iPad 2 when the iPad 3 is released, says The Register
January 17, 2012 | 10:00 am

Index From The Register: Apple is ordering fewer 9.7in, 1024 x 768 IPS LCD panels but it hasn't cut out the part entirely. That suggests it does indeed plan to continue selling the iPad 2 after the LTE-equipped iPad 3 has gone on sale in March. According to whispers from the Asian display supply chain, the Mac maker asked for 1m 9.7in, 2048 x 1536 panels in Q4 2011, but has upped that to an estimated 6-7m units in Q1, DigiTimes reports. It will increase the order count further, to 10m units in Q3. As demand for the higher-resolution panels rises, so orders...

Harry McCracken uses the iPad as his prime computer
December 5, 2011 | 4:47 pm

Images Harry McCracken is a voice to be reckoned with in the technology world.  It's always worth listening to him.  That's why I perked up when saw this article in his Technologizer blog.  He is using his iPad 2 and a Logitech Keyboard Case by Zagg and now takes trips and leaves his computer behing!  Worth reading.  Here's a snippet: …  I think it’s possible to use an iPad as one’s primary device for professional-level content creation. Actually, scratch that. I’mpositive it’s possible–because I’ve been doing it for the past three months, and I’ve been having a really good time. This hasn’t...

The amazing iPad 2 torso hole costume
October 31, 2011 | 12:18 pm

All right, so it doesn’t really involve e-books, but it is a particularly clever Halloween use of two devices that are very popularly used for reading them: a NASA engineer has come up with a costume that involves securing an iPad 2 on the front of your body, another iPad 2 on the back, and starting a FaceTime chat between them to make it look like someone’s blown a gaping hole through your body. My anal-retentive side quibbles with his presentation in the video—the ipad on his back is clearly higher than the one on his front, so you...

Review: Dry Case waterproof case for iPad 2
May 16, 2011 | 11:39 am

P1000025 Saw this around the web and requested a review sample which Dry Case kindly sent me.  Bottom line:  it works! This is the first completely waterproof case for the iPad/iPad 2 that I've seen.  The major outdoor-case maker, Otterbox, makes a couple of splash resistant cases, but nothing waterproof.  According to Dry Case, their case is waterproof up to 100 feet. The case is a thick plastic bag with a sealing top, a one-way air evacuation valve and an sealed-in earphone jack.  Yes, you could listen to your ipod 100 feet under water with this case! The box came with a case, a...

Bargain hunters take note: Older iPad prices falling fast
March 3, 2011 | 12:26 pm

In a follow-up to the iPad post I made last night, it’s worth noting that if you’re interested in picking up last year’s model of iPad, this is a pretty good time to do it. USA Today reports that gadget reseller Gazelle, which pays 70-75% of purchase price for a “like new” device, got so many trade-ins of the older model it had to lower its trade-in offer within hours. Gazelle tells us that typically, a large number of device trade-ins in one day will drive prices down 3-5 days later. These market forces were perceptible...

iPad 2 rumored to have high-res screen, two cameras
January 18, 2011 | 8:15 am

The rumors (and for that matter, a probably-fake video) have been flying hot and heavy about the iPad 2 lately. Since a lot of people are reading on the iPad, and even more might read on the iPad 2, it seems to be worth taking at least some notice of them. TechCrunch’s Devin Coldewey has a pretty good round-up of rumors, with guesstimates on their likelihood of being true. Coldewey goes through them one by one, looks at the arguments for and against each one, and finally writes: The final tally seems to give...
