Chikita Insights numbers show iPad still dominates North American tablet usage
November 10, 2014 | 10:27 am

ipad mini vs ipad airThe Fourth Quarter 2014 Tablet Update from research firm Chikita Insights shows a sustained and apparently unassailable lead for Apple in the North American tablet market. "iPad users generated 79.9% of North American tablet-based Web traffic over the month of September 2014 - a share down from the 81% figure observed one year ago, but a gain of 1.9 percentage points since July 2014," says Chikita. "Meanwhile, Amazon and Samsung tablets are, respectively, still the second- and third-largest sources of tablet Web usage in the U.S. and Canada." The figures are based, acccording to Chikita, on samples of "tens of millions of...

Staples offers 2013 Nexus 7 for $99 with clearance coupon
August 25, 2014 | 5:22 pm

If you’re in the USA, you have a Staples in your area, and they still have 2013 Nexuses in stock, you might be able to get a really good deal. Android Authority has the details on a coupon good for $100 off the 16 GB and 32 GB Nexus 7 tablets. This would cut their price down to $99 and $159, respectively. For a tablet as good as the N7 ‘13, that’s a steal. They’re already out of stock online, so you’d have to go into a store to get the deal. On a related note, Nate at The...

New Nexus 7 Closes In On Formal Intro, Gets Captured In The Wild, Might Pack 4 GB RAM
July 19, 2013 | 11:11 am

Nexus 7Whoa, talk about a rumor flood! We’ve been hearing bits and pieces about the Nexus 7 sequel (likely to be called “New Nexus 7”) for many months now, but an avalanche of information comes our way today, via a number of different sources. First, it seems that the 7-inch tablet will be officially showcased for the first time on July 24 (i.e. next Wednesday), during a special event hosted by Sundar Pichai, Google’s senior VP for Android and Chrome. We’re suspecting Android 4.3 Jelly Bean will also be made official then, but that’s not so very important. What is important is that,...

Second-Gen Nexus 7 Specs Revealed Again … This Time by Asus Employee?
July 4, 2013 | 6:00 pm

Nexus 7Here we go again. The second-gen Nexus 7 rumor storm calmed down for a second or two, but now it’s at full speed again. Was there anything left to be revealed about the N7-2 following the rumor bonanza from a few weeks ago? Not exactly, but it can’t hurt to get further “confirmation” of the tab’s specs, can it? This latest intel technically comes from one of the most reliable sources ever (i.e., an Asus customer representative), but it sadly can’t be verified or fully trusted. An anonymous user of an unnamed Asus device got the info after a supposed conversation with a company employee through...

Are Google Nexus 7 Tablets Deteriorating Over Time?
June 20, 2013 | 11:22 am

Google Nexus 7Over at Android and Me, Dustin Earley is reporting that his Nexus 7 “has gone from the best to worst tablet I’ve ever owned.” That’s a pretty bold statement, and I had to read the article and browse the comments. According to Earley, his once-beloved Nexus 7, which used to be responsive and snappy, is now slow, ponderous and sluggish, often taking several seconds to respond to screen rotation and taps. He had a dramatic quote: I can’t find one person who has been using the Nexus 7 for an extended period of time, and hasn’t seen a massive downgrade in performance. Not surprisingly, the...

Leaked: Alleged First Photo of the Second-Gen Google Nexus 7 Tablet
June 17, 2013 | 9:00 pm

Google Nexus 7Google’s unveiling of the second-gen Nexus 7 tab is likely a matter of days, or, worse case scenario, weeks, so the pieces of the oft-rumored puzzle are one by one nicely falling into place. The first piece—pricing—was revealed last week. Big chunks of the spec sheet have subsequently leaked to the press, while the first low-res photo of the device has been uncovered mere hours ago. While this is not an official pic, it accompanied the N7-2 (codename Asus K009) at the Bluetooth SIG, so it’s 100 percent legit. Sadly, we can’t tell a whole lot about the slate’s design from the image, though...

Rumor: Google’s Next Generation Nexus 7 Tablet to Appear in July
April 3, 2013 | 3:02 pm

NexusWe love the Nexus 7 tab. Google’s valiant iPad competitor nicely packs inside everything we enjoy about the company’s Android OS, their services and the streamlined symbiosis among them. Oh, and it being a full ‘Benjamin’ cheaper than Apple’s must-have tab makes the 7-inch Nexus even more desirable. First unleashed in July, it makes sense for an updated version to be quickly approaching, no? Well, we’re happy, as a report published today from Reuters leads us to believe exactly that. Google will allegedly be discontinuing its first batch of Nexus 7 devices alongside the roll out of its next-gen model. Ridding the floor plans of NVIDIA’s...

Google Nexus 5 Now Rumored To Be Compact 4.5-Incher With CCD Camera
March 26, 2013 | 3:26 pm

Google Nexus 5Shopping for a high-end smartphone these days is surely not easy, with so many ever-so-slightly different devices battling it out for a place in our hearts. But what about six or nine months from now? Well, it’s about to get even more crowded and more crazy-competitive in the mobile market. Aside from the mystery Motorola X Phone, whose most recently leaked spec sheet is a real doozy, the Nexus 5 should also give Samsung, HTC, Sony, Apple and BlackBerry a run for their money. The alleged LG-made new Nexus leaked out for the first time last week, but now another source debunks basically everything the...

Nexus 10 Back in Google Play Store, Ships in Less Than One Week
January 3, 2013 | 10:00 am

By Adrian Diaconescu | for Technology Tell Google’s Nexus devices have surely proven to be intensely popular, but narrowing it down to one thing that has been stopping people from buying the Nexus trio is its limited availability. The Nexus 7 has been the only device to keep up with the high demand, while the 10—and especially the 4—have been very rare sights. And while eBay sellers are “kind” enough to supply you with the goods whenever you need it for luxurious prices, it sort of defeats the purpose, since the Nexus 4 and 10 are very attractive because they’re so cheap. But fret not, ladies and...

Toddler vs. Tablet!
December 29, 2012 | 8:15 pm

Android mascot, LloydMy Christmas holiday week just ended. The Beloved and I took a few days off for a road trip visit with a beloved little friend, and in between the train building, Lego building, blanket-fort building and grilled-cheese sandwich excursions, Little Monkey amused himself with some gadget play. He's only two-and-a-half years old, but he's already logged some (heavily) supervised time with parental iPhones, iPads and so on. I had, in fact, loaded up my own iPad with Mr. Potato Head, Toca Band and other kid-friendly goodies just for his amusement. And ... ? Google Nexus for the win! Little Monkey spent most of his gadget time...
