Top ten iOS app lists feature some reading apps
January 19, 2011 | 2:26 pm

Gizmodo has posted lists of the top ten paid and unpaid iPhone and iPad apps of all time. Most of them don’t have a whole lot to do with reading, but there are a couple of interesting exceptions on the iPad lists. On the free list for iPad, iBooks takes the number 8 slot, and Bible takes the number 9; on the paid list, GoodReader is at number 8. No real sign of reading apps on the iPhone lists, though that just means that other apps were more popular for the form factor. It certainly shows that iPad owners...

Quick Note: GoodReader for iPad updated
October 3, 2010 | 12:24 am

quick note.pngAccording to Dan Cohen at Gear Diary this excellent program has been updated: So what’s new in GoodReader version 3? First and foremost GoodReader now not only lets you read PDFs but it lets you annotate them too. With the new version you can add notes, highlights, markups and drawings. These can then be save for later viewing. You can even come back and edit it further OR edit it on a different iPad or computer. But that’s not all. The new version of GoodReader for iPad makes it possible to select and copy text directly in a PDF document. See Dan's...

iPad e-book app review: DiceBook
July 27, 2010 | 6:29 pm

DiceBook icon Under normal circumstances, it would take something pretty special for me to recommend more than one app in a particular category for the iPad. Does anyone really need more than one CBR reader when Comic Zeal does the job so well, for instance? Or more than one Twitter app, or RSS reader, etc.? (E-book readers are, of course, a special case, given that so many of them only read their own DRM-laden formats.) So when it comes to PDF readers, why would someone want anything other than the inexpensive, powerful, and fairly easy-to-use GoodReader? Actually, there is a pretty good...

iPhone/iPad e-book app review: GoodReader
April 21, 2010 | 11:12 pm

Three views of Spirit of the Century: Paper, iPod Touch GoodReader, iPad GoodReader PDF is not an e-book format. People call it one, and pretend it is, but it really is not. It’s an electronic representation of a paper book, and that is just not the same thing. Most PDFs are not actually meant for on-screen viewing. When you try to view a portrait PDF on a landscape PC screen, you get the upper one third to one half, then when you page down you get more. This makes reading it fairly annoying, especially for a work published in columns. PDF is simply a “dehydrated” paper book: a precisely-formatted representation...

iPad Review: Apps and e-books video demo
April 17, 2010 | 12:59 pm

Here’s another video: a ten minute exploration of some of the apps. I realize that you’re not going to be able to see the screen very well—the video itself is only about 1/4 the resolution of the iPad screen—but it will at least give some sense of scale, and how quickly everything loads. I’ll have some better screenshots and a more in-depth blog post soon....

iPad Quick Notes: Reviews, must-have apps
April 10, 2010 | 11:38 am

Here’s another roundup of some of the more interesting iPad news links I’ve noticed over the last day or so. First of all, here’s a fairly unusual iPad review. Most of them have been either overwhelmingly positive, or negative because of the rights issues involved (i.e. Cory Doctorow’s). Here is a humorous negative review from Macworld Senior Contributor Ben Long who finds that most of what he needs to do are things the iPad does not do well—and most of what the iPad does well are things he does not need to. The movie...

iPad tips: Enjoy PDFs, ePubs, other files without iTunes hassles—thanks to transfer tricks and cool e-book apps
April 6, 2010 | 4:18 pm

imageLike other happy owners of the iPad, I think that the critics should try the machine---ideally with more than a quick hands-on at an Apple Store or Best Buy. No, the LCD isn’t optimal for outdoor reading. But I myself read mostly inside and dislike the text-to-background contrast of the current E Ink. And as for the iPad’s weight of a pound and a half, I’ll survive---given the machine’s many capabilities. If nothing else, I can absorb books better if I don’t have trouble seeing them; and the new Brio eReader app could make the large-screen iPad even...

Reader question: Syncing e-books to iPhone
March 17, 2010 | 11:15 am

In comments on a post relating to the announcement that iBooks on the iPad would be able to sync “free” EPUB books through iTunes, a reader expressed skepticism that users would be able to download them without iTunes. Hey iPhone/iPod Touch users: What can you download directly and use without using itunes on a separate computer? Can you download a file to the iPhone/iPod Touch via the web then open that file? If I want to read a Baen epub why do I need to go through iTunes? In fact,...
