Fusion Garage goes into liquidation, leaving $40 million in debts (Updated)
January 9, 2012 | 12:15 pm

Remember the claims of cold fusion that fizzled when scientists tried to reproduce the results? In that light, Fusion Garage’s name may have proven prophetic, because instead of shipping the promised new Grid 10 tablet, Slashgear reports that the company has just gone into liquidation. It turns out that there just weren’t enough pre-orders of the Grid 10 tablet to save the company, and it couldn’t secure additional funding—so instead of shipping the tablets (and sending a free one to everyone who bought the original Joo Joo) it went under, reportedly owing $40 million to creditors. (It was pretty clear when...

Fusion Garage melts down? (Updated)
December 18, 2011 | 2:15 am

After what looked at first like a promising return with its “Grid 10” tablet products, The Verge reports that the tablet manufacturing company Fusion Garage seems to have entirely disappeared. The Fusion Garage website only produces a database error, and Fusion Garage has not been responding to any requests for an update on the October 1 delivery date that came and went without the tablets being delivered. In fact, even Fusion Garage’s own PR firm has had such a hard time reaching the company that it has decided to cease representing it. Of course, we don’t...

Quick Notes: Inexpensive tablets à gogo
September 29, 2011 | 11:44 am

With the Amazon Fire suddenly burning at the front of bargain-conscious consumers’ minds, other cheap tablet news has been coming out of the woodwork. Let’s look at some of it. Not sure how I missed noticing this. In a desperate effort to stem the tide of its stock slumping yesterday, Barnes & Noble knocked $25 off the price of its Nook Color tablet in an e-mail promotion immediately after the Amazon presentation, along with offering free shipping. It seems to be at full price on the website, however. But I’d expect the price to dip for everyone when the...

Fusion Garage cuts price of Grid 10 tablet by $200 to $299/$399
September 13, 2011 | 3:15 am

Weird as it is to say for a company whose first try at a tablet was a noteworthy flop, the news coming in about Fusion Garage’s Grid 10 10” tablet just keeps getting better and better. Engadget reports that the prices on the tablet have dropped from the previously-announced $499 for 16GB wifi-only and $599 3G price points—roughly equivalent to the iPad’s—to $299 and $399, respectively. A spokesperson for the company told Engadget that it had planned to use those lower prices all along, but hadn’t been able to announce it due to ongoing discussions with a supplier. This...

New Fusion Garage tablets quite usable, Wired reports
August 17, 2011 | 3:15 pm

Grid10_img1Surprise surprise. Wired reports that Fusion Garage’s new Grid 10 tablet and Grid 4 smart phone are remarkably usable, marred by only a few glitches that need to be ironed out before the devices are ready for prime-time. The Wired hands-on piece notes that the devices are built on Android, but use a different interface style than any other Android device. The interface is built around a grid-like scheme, with a sliding window that moves around over a desktop bigger than the whole screen can display at once. Fusion Garage re-thought much of the...

FCC filing suggests JooJoo 2 in the offing
July 28, 2011 | 10:02 pm

Like a creeping zombie that refuses to lie down and die, it appears that Fusion Garage is primed to claw its way out of the grave with another try at a tablet device. Liliputing reports that Fusion Garage has sent a device to the FCC for testing. Details are sparse, but it’s apparently tablet-shaped. This wasn’t entirely unexpected, given that the company said last year it had a new model planned for this year. All the same, it’s still a little surprising they’re actually going through with it. Fusion Garage’s first device, the JooJoo, might as well have...

New JooJoo announced for next year
October 26, 2010 | 8:15 am

0d45d4b7-93d7-416d-b41f-d9e538f0be2bIn one of the BMW promotional films starring Clive Owen, after some fancy driving Owen glances over his shoulder at his passenger and bemusedly asks, “You still alive?” That was about my feeling on noticing a Gizmodo report stating that Fusion Garage, renowned for its spectacular breakup with TechCrunch practically on the eve of the launch of the “Crunchpad" (subsequently renamed the JooJoo), is going to come out with a new model of JooJoo tablet next year. It was surprising to find they’re still alive in the face of a lawsuit from TechCrunch, overall poor reviews, and...

Ruling issued in TechCrunch/Fusion Garage JooJoo lawsuit
August 30, 2010 | 9:15 am

cbd3[1] Speaking of tablets, anyone remember the JooJoo nee CrunchPad? It got a software update last week, and when I saw the story on Engadget a few days ago I actually had to cudgel my brain before I remembered what it was. But that’s actually not the most interesting news to hit about the device lately. Last night, the ruling came out on the lawsuit that Mike Arrington filed against Fusion Garage for allegedly stealing the tablet right out from under them. The ruling itself can be found on Scribd, but an interesting analysis can be found at Hank...
