free textbooks I received an email earlier this week from Dr. Frank Lowney, an occasional TeleRead contributor, and the author of The Coming ePublishing Revolution in Higher Education. Dr. Lowney, who is professionally affiliated with Georgia College & State University, most definitely knows his stuff when it comes to college textbooks, and higher education in general. Ohio System teams with Flat World Knowledge on free digital textbooks

USOmap From Campus Technology: The University System of Ohio is setting a spark under faculty members to encourage them to try out digital textbooks in the classroom with a new pilot program that will allow 1,000 Ohio students to receive the texts for free. Flat World open textbooks receives $15 million in funding

flatworld.pngAccording the the Financial Times, funding is being led by Bertelsmann. Flat World Knowldedge offers free textbooks online, but sells print on demand editions as its sorts of funding. The new funds from Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments, Bessemer Venture Partners and others will allow the company to expand its catalogue of titles beyond a focus on business and economics to include books for the 125 most popular courses on college campuses, said Jeff Shelstad, chief executive.
