Some worthwhile ideas for ebook devices
June 22, 2010 | 9:31 am
I came across this video by Kevin Rose, a founder of Digg, with some suggestions for future enhancements for ebook reading devices. I think his suggestions are excellent. The question now is whether they can be implemented at what seems to be the new price levels for e-ink readers. Barnes & Noble has introduced a new $149 wi-fi version of its nook and has lowered the price on its 3G nook to $199. Amazon has lowered its price for the K2 Kindle to $189 and Sony has lowered the pricing on its line of readers: Pocket Edition (PRS-300) $169.99, Touch Edition...

Thanks to a tweet by edejager, I picked this up on the eReaders website. The original text is in Dutch and here is a Google translation:
The Dutch company iRex Technologies has applied for suspension of payments, reports the FD. Disappointing sales of the DR800, the last descendant of the iRex ereaderfamilie have led to financial difficulties which the company has been trapped, said Hans Brons CEO iRex-. Philips spinoff iRex Technologies was the foundation of electronic paper as currently applied in many eReaders. The company launched in 2006, the iLiad eReader, one of the first commercially available eReaders which...
Power of the Catalog: Kindle Undercuts Agency Model Pricing by Adding 5,000 Titles a Day, 80% Priced Between $5 and $9.98
May 24, 2010 | 8:31 am
It has been only 15 days since our last systematic look at the population of ebook price points in the Kindle Store, but there are two reasons why it makes a lot of sense to take a fresh look today: first, Amazon fulfilled its plan to restructure its Kindle Store bestseller lists and divide them into "paid" and "free" listings overnight last night; and equally important, during the past 15 days the Kindle Store catalog has experienced its most explosive growth ever, averaging over 5,000 new titles per...

According to Digitimes, Apple is working on a 5 to 7 inch version of the iPad which will be launched in the first quarter of 2011. The Digitimes analyst, citing upstream sources, says the smaller iPad will be priced under $400 and will focused mainly on reading.

Review of PocketBook 360
February 17, 2010 | 7:10 am
The Lewis Four has a comprehensive review of the PocketBook 360, a unit we don't hear too much about. Scott says: Flipping pages was absolutely fast, faster than a Kindle 2 and ran circles around a nook. I tried both unprotected and protected ePub files as well as Adobe PDF and in all cases, the page turning speed was quite impressive. As you'll see in the video below, it finished turning the page before the nook began to refresh it's screen, time and time again. ... To illustrate the difference in speed, I shot some video at 120 frames per second...

Two weeks with a Sony PRS-700: E-book and photo display
June 4, 2009 | 6:00 pm
Here is a video demonstration of how the Sony PRS-700 does at reading e-books and showing photos. You won’t be able to see it in the full quality that it has in person, of course, but at least the footage should give you some idea of how it behaves. Ex-eReader employee on the past and future of e-books
February 2, 2009 | 10:52 pm
Ars Technica today has a great (and long—it goes on for seven pages) feature editorial about the past and future of e-books by Ars columnist John Siracusa. Siracusa, who took a job at the company that would eventually become eReader back when it was still called Palm Digital Media, has some fascinating insights and opinions about how e-books got started, what they are now, and what they might become.
Siracusa holds several opinions about e-books that may seem controversial. For example, he feels that people still don't "get" e-books even now—which is why e-books have been so slow to catch...
