How much would you pay for a phone installed with Flappy Bird?
February 10, 2014 | 4:24 pm

Too much of a good thing can be tough to handle. Dong Nguyen the creator of the viral game Flappy Bird couldn’t handle the quick rise of popularity of his game – even though he was supposedly making a lot of money off ads – so he took it down. This has caused people to find alternative methods to finding Flappy Bird, one of which may cost people thousands of dollars. Several smartphones and tablets that have the game installed already have sold on eBay for more than $3,000 – all the way up to $10,100. Are all these auctions legit? Probably not. I...

Factory-Refurbished 8-Inch Nook HD Android Tablet now $70 on eBay
October 25, 2013 | 12:32 pm

GEDC1556 Remember that 8” Nook HD refurb I got a couple of months ago? An eBay seller has a “limited quantity” of factory-refurbished units available at the amazing price of $70 each. (Just over 1,900 had been sold by the time I wrote this.) You can add a two-year SquareTrade warranty for another $17. (Update: The price went up to $80 after 2,000 units were sold. Still a great bargain, though.) As I’ve written elsewhere, this is a great little Android tablet. Maybe not so much if you stick with the stock B&N operating system, which will give you Google Play but...

Refurbished Nook Simple Touch: $40 on eBay
September 24, 2013 | 4:48 am

If you’re looking for a good cheap e-reader, an eBay seller is running a $40 with free shipping special on refurbished Nook Simple Touch units. This is B&N’s 2011 model, a 6” 800x600 unlit Pearl e-ink reader that can do EPUB, including Barnes & Noble’s and Adobe Digital Editions’ DRM. It has 2 GB of onboard storage, plus an SD card slot for loading more media. If you’re invested in Barnes & Noble’s content ecosystem (for example, you have a lot of e-books from eReader/Fictionwise that got imported to B&N after it shut those stores down), or just want something...

Apple apparently opens refurbished outlet on eBay
November 19, 2012 | 11:04 pm

ebay-logoIt’s not clear whether Apple is doing this or it’s just someone who’s cut a deal with them (both 9to5Mac and CNet asked Apple for clarification, but the company apparently hasn’t responded yet), but an eBay store entitled “refurbished outlet” has opened up, selling factory-refurbished Apple products at the same prices (including some 4th-gen iPod Touches at the bargain prices I noted a couple of weeks ago) and with the same one-year warranty as on the Apple Store. (It’s a buy-it-now only operation, so there’s no bidding.) As a side benefit, only a few states’ residents—California, Indiana, Nevada, New Jersey,...

Accessorizing Your Tablet Through eBay: A buying guide
August 20, 2012 | 11:42 pm

By Jon Jermey Q) What $1.50 accessory from eBay can just about double the usefulness of your iPad, e-reader or Android tablet? A) A non-slip sticky pad. You can see these in import shops now, too: They’re made of the same gooey material as stretchy kids’ toys, with one side flat and the other ribbed by raised dots. The standard size is around 8 x 14 centimetres, and they come in opaque black and a variety of translucent colours. You may already have one to keep things from sliding off your car dashboard. The reason they go so nicely with tablet devices is because...

B&N offers refurbished Nook Color + Simple Touch bundle for $149
March 26, 2012 | 11:44 pm

Barnes & Noble is offering an amazing deal via eBay, that I would grab up in a heartbeat if I weren’t $80 overdrawn at the moment: a refurbished Nook Color (the first-generation tablet, not the Nook Tablet) for $129, plus a refurbished Nook Simple Touch for $20 more. It’s not clear how long this deal will last; they’ve already sold 4,000 of them. If you’re interested, you might want to jump in fast. (Found via CNet.)...

Barnes & Noble discounts Nook Simple Touch to $75 on eBay
December 16, 2011 | 2:45 pm

I previously mentioned Barnes & Noble selling refurbished Nook Colors on eBay for $130, but it turns out that’s not the only great e-reader deal the site is offering. CNet notes that, today and tomorrow only, B&N is listing the new, not refurbished, Nook Simple Touch e-reader on eBay for $74.99 ($25 off the current sale price elsewhere) with delivery by December 22. It notes that only a limited quantity of the readers are available, and it seems to sell out and get resupplied throughout the day. That’s $25 less than Amazon’s touchscreen Kindle With Special Offers. Might be...

Black Friday special: $119.99 refurbished Nook Color
November 25, 2011 | 11:43 am

Barnes & Noble is listing a refurbished Nook Color (its first-generation Android tablet/e-reader, which is more hackable than the new Nook Tablet) for $119.99 on eBay, knocking $30 off the normal refurb price. Although it is refurbished, it does come with a one-year warranty, which is better than most non-Apple refurb sales get. A couple of my friends picked up this tablet back in the day when it was more expensive and were very happy with it (once they’d jailbroken it). I don’t have the disposable income to snag one myself right now, alas, but don’t let that stop...

Barnes & Noble selling Nook Wi-Fi for $99
May 24, 2011 | 8:37 am

We have only a few hours to go until the official revelation of Barnes & Noble’s new e-book reader. This is probably why Barnes & Noble has started selling new Nook Wi-Fis for $99 on Ebay, undercutting its current regular price by $50. Not quite as good a deal as yesterday’s one-day-only refurbished Nook 3G for $85, but still a decent price for those who graze Barnes & Noble’s side of the e-book fence. Prospective purchasers may still want to wait a few hours to see what the new reader looks like before investing, however....

Nook WiFi for $79 on Ebay – B&N is the seller
April 7, 2011 | 9:31 am

Screen shot 2011 04 07 at 9 28 23 AM B&N is selling the Nook WiFi on ebay for $79.  This includes free standard shipping.  The units, however, are manufacturer refurbished. There's also a 14 day money back guarantee, but you pay return shipping. Seems like a great deal.  If you are a Kindle owner, for example,  its a good way to jump into the B&N community with a minimal investment.  I can never hurt to have two suppliers. Thanks to Brad's Reader for the heads up....

Bargain hunters take note: Older iPad prices falling fast
March 3, 2011 | 12:26 pm

In a follow-up to the iPad post I made last night, it’s worth noting that if you’re interested in picking up last year’s model of iPad, this is a pretty good time to do it. USA Today reports that gadget reseller Gazelle, which pays 70-75% of purchase price for a “like new” device, got so many trade-ins of the older model it had to lower its trade-in offer within hours. Gazelle tells us that typically, a large number of device trade-ins in one day will drive prices down 3-5 days later. These market forces were perceptible...
