Wizards of the Coast starts selling D&D PDFs again
January 23, 2013 | 3:31 am

ScreenClip(45) Remember how, back in 2009, Wizards of the Coast pulled all its PDF products from on-line gaming store Paizo and announced it was ceasing PDF sales altogether? Apparently it only took about four years for the company to change its mind again. Wired’s GeekDad reports that WotC has launched a new e-book store site, dndclassics.com, in conjunction with on-line RPG e-book seller DriveThruRPG. The site currently offers over 80 products ranging in age from the old red and blue books up to the latest 4E stuff, with prices ranging from $4.99 for older products to $17.99 for...

Nobilis 3rd Edition: Converting an RPG to EPUB
July 11, 2011 | 11:15 am

nobilisOne of my earliest blog posts about e-books, back in 2002 when I was writing for Jeff Kirvin’s “Writing on Your Palm,” was called “Whither the PDA D&D?”. I pointed out that, whereas fiction e-books had made the transition to portable e-format, role-playing games had yet to do so. Possibly one of the biggest obstacles was the way that so many of them depend on tables, which don’t tend to translate well to small screens. Given how big and thick role-playing game books tend to be, they would seem tailor-made for such a conversion—if someone could get around the...

DriveThruRPG offers $724 in e-books for $25 to help Doctors Without Borders in Pakistan
October 18, 2010 | 2:21 pm

drivethru-pakistan In January, we covered a fundraising drive that DriveThruRPG put on to assist Doctors Without Borders’s relief efforts in Haiti, selling a $1480 bundle of RPG e-books for the budget-friendly price of $20. It ended up earning over $160,000—not exactly pocket change—and showed that gamers are willing to step up to help out in time of crisis (or, at least, are willing to take advantage of a great deal on gaming e-books even if they would otherwise have been opposed to donating). Now DriveThruRPG has another charity bundle available, to help Doctors Without Borders’s relief efforts in the...

Quick Notes: Mossberg on Irex, free RPG e-book, academic publishers, Kindle for Android, Google, saving newspapers
March 11, 2010 | 11:15 am

Tech review maven Walter Mossberg has posted a review of the Irex DR800SG e-book reader. This reader costs $140 more than the Kindle e-reader and is compatible with the Barnes & Noble store among others. Mossberg was not terribly impressed, pointing out a number of areas where its design and user interface could use improvement. In observation of Read An E-Book Week, DriveThruRPG and White Wolf are offering a free watermarked-PDF download of the 224-page World of Darkness rulebook (list price $24.99) for as long as the week lasts. Enjoy! A recent survey shows that 90% of...

Final days of DriveThruRPG’s digital giveaway donation drive
January 29, 2010 | 5:36 pm

Only a couple of days remain to donate $20 to help Doctors Without Borders’s efforts in earthquake-torn Haiti if you want to receive the $1480 bundle of digital RPG content from DriveThruRPG that we covered here and here. The tally on the site currently stands at $162,200 donated by gamers to help out in Haiti. This digital giveaway exemplifies one of the greatest benefits of the zero marginal cost of distribution of digital media. The low overhead of providing it means there is practically no cost to give it away, so it can serve as a very...

January 24, 2010 | 11:46 am

Wanna buy a T-shirt?I’m at Springfield, MO gaming con VisionCon helping staff the booth for the other Springfield con, SpringfieldGAME. This seems like an appropriate time and place to reflect further upon the DriveThruRPG Doctors Without Borders charity drive that I covered a few days ago. According to the site, gamers have donated over $117,000 so far. DriveThruRPG will accept donations until further notice, but the bundle will only be given out through the end of January (though the downloads will remain accessible afterward to those who have already purchased it). For those curious about where their donations are going, BoingBoing has...
