Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite $20 off today only
March 4, 2014 | 1:17 pm

kindle and kindle paperwhite $20 offSorry I didn't notice this sooner, but Amazon is running a 1-day sale on the Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite in honor of National Reading Month. $20 off brings the Kindle to just $49 and the Paperwhite to $99, assuming you get them with Special Offers. Those are some great prices for the readers. The sale is timely for me. I sold my Kindle Touch last year, and I've been suffering from seller's regret since we started planning a cruise for later this year. Tablets are great ereaders, but they aren't so good if you're planning to read in the sun, by the pool, cold...

Just a quick recap of the main features: Hi-res display (1920X1200) 2.2GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM Mayday button (on-tablet support) Ability to download Prime Streaming Video (my favorite feature) Front-facing HD camera It's a nice device, and this is a great price....

Universal Marvin App Free For “Limited Time”
November 22, 2013 | 3:56 pm

marvinMarvin released an upgrade today, and while the changelog wasn't as impressive as some I've seen, there's still big news. This was the last upgrade for Marvin for iPad. Going forward, all updates will be to the universal iPhone/iPad version. From a development perspective, that makes sense, and as a user, I much prefer universal apps. However, the universal version isn't free. It's $2.99 (quite reasonable for such a great app). However, even you cheapskates don't have to worry. To aid in the transition, the app will be free for a "very limited time." I'd interpret that to mean a couple...

App Sale: SwiftKey is Half Off. Today Only
October 22, 2013 | 10:37 am

SwiftKeyI've tested and reviewed many third-party keyboards for Android, and SwiftKey remains my go-to keyboard on my Nook HD. If you've been thinking about trying SwiftKey, today is a great day. It's half off on Google Play (to celebrate 5 years of Android), bringing it to $1.99, which is an excellent price. Here's my review from earlier this year, if you want to check it out before heading over to buy the app....

‘Temporary’ Surface Pro Price Cut of $100 Now Permanent
September 1, 2013 | 1:48 pm

Surface ProI called it earlier this month when I wrote about the temporary price cut on the Surface Pro tablets. I said I wouldn’t be surprised if the cut became permanent, and now it has. Check out the All Things D article on the price cut. Their choice of image is priceless. They are also reporting that the cut, which previously had been available only to customers in the U.S., Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Canada, is now available in all markets where the Pro is sold. They are also offering a $40 discount on Touch Covers and a $50 discount on Surface RT bundles. In...

Deal Alert: HP Slate 7 Available for Just $140 ($30 Off) via HP.com and Best Buy
July 10, 2013 | 11:30 am

HP Slate 7Quick, what’s the best 7-inch Android tablet money can buy? And by “money,” I mean less than 200 bucks. Asus and Google’s Nexus 7, you say? Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD? How about HP’s Slate 7? No, the Slate 7 is not the best Android tab out there. Not even close. But it’s cheap. So cheap in fact that it makes the N7 look like a luxury product. Initially made available for $170, HP’s 7-incher goes for 30 bucks less starting today, both via the manufacturer’s official website and through Best Buy. $140 is a ridiculously low amount of cash to pay for a gadget nowadays and the...

Deal Alert: The 32GB Nexus 7 is $199 at Staples
July 9, 2013 | 4:14 pm

Nexus 7By Jenni Lada Need a new tablet? Staples has a fantastic deal July 7-13, 2013. Brace yourself: You can now get a Nexus 7 32GB tablet for only $199. It’s an incredible deal, and one any potential Android tablet owner should consider. See, a Nexus 7 32GB tablet normally costs $249.99. Usually, it’s the 16GB model that’s $200. But for this week, Staples is taking $50 off the price of one of the best tablets out there. This model has between eight and 10 hours of battery life, depending on what you’re doing. Plus, with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and a NVIDIA Tegra 3...

Deal Alert: Asus MeMo Pad 7 Tablet Goes For Just $100 Via Adorama ($50 Off)
June 25, 2013 | 1:01 pm

Asus MeMo PadWho said Android Jelly Bean tablets have to be pricey? Not us, not Asus, and certainly not Adorama, since the online retailer now sells the MeMo Pad 7 (aka ME172V) for just $99.95. That’s a whopping $50 off the slate’s list price, though in all honesty it’s just $10 or $20 less than what sellers like Amazon or Newegg currently charge for the MeMo Pad. Then again, free money is free money, plus Adorama’s $100 ME172V is in all likelihood the cheapest ever Jelly Bean-powered slate. (At least the cheapest coming from a well-known manufacturer like Asus.) Now, what does the 7-incher...

(Hurry, Limited-Time) Deal Alert: Get a Barnes & Noble Nook HD for $129, Nook HD+ for $149
June 11, 2013 | 10:30 am

Nook HDI know, I know, there are oodles of tablets cooler than Barnes & Noble’s Nooks around, starting with the uber-cheap Nexus 7 and the sleek iPad Mini. But with B&N holding constant “yard sales”, I dare you to find a slate with more bang for the buck. Leading to Father’s Day for instance, the Nook HD goes for just $129 both in physical stores and online, while the Nook HD+ is $149. That gives you roughly five days (Father’s Day is this Sunday, remember) to decide between the two. Our advice? Get them both. One for you, one for your dad,...

Deal Alert: Amazon Slashes Price on 7-Inch Kindle Fire HDs in Time for Mother’s Day
May 7, 2013 | 12:00 pm

AmazonAs if to confirm a 10-inch Kindle Fire tablet is in fact in the works and coming our way soon, Amazon has decided to slash the prices of the thing’s existent smaller siblings, namely the 7-inch Fire HDs. However, the promo likely has nothing to do with the alleged coming of the 10-incher, being instead a special, time-limited Mother’s Day offer. Well, who cares why is Amazon doing it, right? As long as they’re comfortable with shaving a cool $20 bucks off the slates’ prices, we’re comfortable with paying just $179 for the entry-level model. Be careful though, because the $20 discount applies only...

April 16, 2013 | 12:15 pm

Nook HD+Did you miss out on last month’s Barnes & Noble deal bundling every purchased Nook HD+ tablet with a free Nook Simple Touch e-reader? Well, I wouldn’t sweat it too much, seeing as Walmart is now offering the same Nook HD+ as part of an equally as lucrative promotional offer. Every 9-incher purchased via the retailer’s website gets you a free $70 eGift Card that you can then use at Walmart.com, Samsclub.com or in Walmart and Sam’s Club brick and mortar stores. The gift card doesn’t have an expiration date and it can be used towards the purchase of any product, but of...
