Black Friday e-reading deals: Nook, Apple
November 23, 2011 | 11:51 am

Black Friday is almost upon us, and it bids fair to be an e-reader kind of holiday season. There’s no word yet from Amazon on any discounts on its Kindle products (though it seems to be discounting just about everything else), but Barnes & Noble has announced a special deal on a “Limited Edition” of its Nook Simple Touch e-reader—in stores only, it’s knocking $20 off the price. This brings it down to $79—on par with Amazon’s lowest-tier ad-supported Kindle price. Amusingly, one of its listed benefits is No Annoying Ads Reading...

$89 Black Friday Kindles sold out in seconds
November 28, 2010 | 4:31 pm

Blog Kindle reports on the “aftermath” of the Black Friday $89 Amazon Kindle deal. As might reasonably be expected, the Kindles sold out so fast that some people accused Amazon of not actually having them at all. Not that it’s too surprising, given how popular Amazon is; the blog notes that between Twitter and Facebook, there was the potential for half a million people to be aware of the deal even before its spread on blogs (such as ours) came into play. Under all that attention, even several thousand refurbished units could sell out literally in seconds. ...

Where to find that $89 Kindle 2 on Amazon today
November 26, 2010 | 11:01 am

112610-kindle2blackfriday.jpg By now, you’ve probably read that Amazon is offering its previous generation Kindle for $89 today starting at 12 noon ET. It’s a well-made product even if it doesn’t have the Wi-Fi or higher-contrast Pearl E Ink screen, and I’m sure it will sell out within the first minute or two. So how do you get in line for it? Go here: In the Lightning Deals box, select the Kindle Store category and you’ll see the listing. Amazon doesn’t list the price of a lightning deal until the deal starts, but it lists a countdown timer so you know when to check...

Apple announces Black Friday discounts
November 25, 2010 | 8:00 pm

78985166-4ab7-4164-a982-bf786527e711Apple has posted the discount list for its Black Friday sale. As expected, they include $101 off on iMacs and MacBooks (Pro and Air), $41 off on the iPad, $21 to $41 (essentially, 10% off for each model) on the iPod Touch, and $11 off on the iPod Nano. There are also minor discounts on a number of accessories including the iPad case, camera connection kit, wireless keyboard, keyboard dock, and so on. These discounts may be had either on-line or in an Apple Store. (Given the Black Friday crowds, on-line is probably where the smart shoppers will go.) ...

Barnes & Noble lists ‘refurbished’ Nooks for $99.99, $119.99 on eBay for rest of year
November 25, 2010 | 5:54 pm

Nate the Great at The Digital Reader notes that one of his readers reported that Barnes and Noble listed refurbished Wi-Fi Nooks on eBay for $79.99 today; it sold 3,590 of them at that price before the listing ended, but has relisted them for $99.99 (and the 3G + WiFi Nook for $119.99) for the next 26 days (or, presumably, until they run out). The $79.99 price went Amazon’s Black Friday $89.99 2G Kindle refurb deal one better, and the entire-holiday-season length of the deal certainly beats Amazon’s one-day-only offer. Take that, Jeff Bezos! I wonder if Amazon will...

Amazon to offer Kindle 2 for $89 on Black Friday? Yesterday biggest Kindle sales day ever
November 24, 2010 | 7:43 am

kindle-ww-slate-final-110509._SX320_SY240_CR0,0,0,0_V226589088_.png.jpegFrom an email I got from It seems that Amazon will offer the Kindle 2 for only $89 on Black Friday... We couldn't find official word yet, but that's the talk on the Kindle fan page on Amazon. The Kindle 2 is still a great e-reader with a 6" E Ink display, 3G wireless and 2GB of memory. In related news, Amazon says that yesterday was the biggest sales day ever for Kindle devices. Seems that the iPad and other tablets are not hurting e-reader sales after all, at least for now....

Apple teases Black Friday savings on Mac, iPad, iPod products
November 23, 2010 | 2:08 pm

PC Magazine reports that Apple is having another 1-day Black Friday event. The blurb on Apple’s site is not very specific, but does promise “dozens of great iPad, iPod, and Mac gifts for everyone on your list.” Last year’s sale included discounts on iMacs and MacBook Pros, and $21 to $41 markdowns on the iPod Touch. The iPad wasn’t around last year, but may well get similar markdowns this year—especially given that Apple will want to clear out inventory to make room for its next-generation launch next year. (I wonder if Apple took this season into consideration when it...

TJ Maxx selling 16GB iPad for $100 off
November 19, 2010 | 5:01 am

12bac58e-dab6-4c82-abfc-7e1a8b8ef9b9Our sister blog Appletell spotted an Engadget story pointing out that select TJ Maxx stores are carrying the 16 GB wifi iPad for $399—$100 off the list price of $499. That’s not “carrying it on Black Friday,” that’s carrying it now. If you’re interested and want to snag one, probably best get there as soon as you see this story; at a price like that, it’s doubtful they’ll stick around long. Of course, given that it is probably only 4 months or so until the next generation of iPad comes out, it is possible you might rather wait for...

Black Friday e-reader roundup
November 14, 2010 | 3:24 am

black-friday-comic-2It appears this is going to be the Christmas (or at least the Black Friday) of the $99 e-reader. Apart from the $99 Nook at Best Buy we mentioned the other day (and other discounts on the Pandigital Novel ($139.99) and Sharper Image Literati ($119.99)), now the leaked Wal*Mart Black Friday circular (PDF; link may not be working by the time you read this) indicates that the Sony Digital Reader Pocket Edition (PRS300SC) will be on sale for $99 between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. on that fateful Friday. Sears lists a Libre eBook Reader PRO for $89.99, Hastings...

Quick Note: Nook and Best Buy for Black Friday; iPad update delayed
November 12, 2010 | 5:20 pm

quick note.pngAccording to our sister blog, Gamertell, Best Buy's Black Friday circular has leaked and one of the items is the Nook, which will be selling for $100, instead of $150. You can find more here. ___________________________________________ EbookNewser is reporting that the long awaited iPad iOS 4.2 software update has been delayed till next week. Evidently there was a problem with the WiFi performance of the previous Gold Master and it had to be recalled for more tweaking. I've been on tenterhooks waiting for it. I need multi-tasking. ...

Will we find an iPad 2 under the Christmas tree?
September 11, 2010 | 1:54 am

ipad1[1] AppleInsider reports that someone with knowledge of Apple’s future plans has leaked to them that a version of the iPad with a FaceTime camera is already in “advanced testing stages.” Further, AppleInsider expects that Apple will be releasing the device in time for the holiday season. While this would represent a considerable shortening of the traditional about-12-month product cycle for Apple devices—the iPad was only released back in April—it would give Apple FaceTime capability across all its mobile product lines, giving it the head start it needs to ward off compatible tablet competitors before opening the FaceTime standard...
