Black Friday e-reader roundup
November 14, 2010 | 3:24 am

black-friday-comic-2It appears this is going to be the Christmas (or at least the Black Friday) of the $99 e-reader. Apart from the $99 Nook at Best Buy we mentioned the other day (and other discounts on the Pandigital Novel ($139.99) and Sharper Image Literati ($119.99)), now the leaked Wal*Mart Black Friday circular (PDF; link may not be working by the time you read this) indicates that the Sony Digital Reader Pocket Edition (PRS300SC) will be on sale for $99 between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. on that fateful Friday. Sears lists a Libre eBook Reader PRO for $89.99, Hastings...

You can find more here. ___________________________________________ EbookNewser is reporting that the long awaited iPad iOS 4.2 software update has been delayed till next week. Evidently there was a problem with the WiFi performance of the previous Gold Master and it had to be recalled for more tweaking. I've been on tenterhooks waiting for it. I need multi-tasking. ...

Tablets for the holidays? Yes, says Best Buy

images.jpgA Forbes article says that Best Buy is going to be concentrating on tablets for the holidays: “Going into the holidays, we will make tablets a focus,” said Shawn Score, the president of Best Buy’s wireless retail unit, Best Buy Mobile, in an interview. “Like e-readers over the last couple years, we think customers will think of Best Buy for tablets and expect us to have the right ones.” ... Score declined to specify which tablets Best Buy will carry, but said there will be multiple models. “We will have a great assortment of them,” he said. “It won’t be 32,...

Geek Squad launches $29.99 ereader setup service – a great idea!
August 19, 2010 | 11:33 am

images.jpgThat's right and I think it's a great idea. Most of us reading ebooks today are either techies or computer savvy people. However, ebooks are reaching out to a greater and greater audience and a lot, if not most, of this audience does not have a high degree to computer literacy. They can use the machine for everyday tasks, but if it gets more complicated than that there is a problem. Talk about updating "firmware" on an ereader and I will bet you that many ereader owners don't know what "firmware" is. This is one reason why...

Tablet coming from RocketFish/Best Buy?
August 9, 2010 | 2:55 am

rocketfishtablet.jpgEngadget has a story about this. Evidently Best Buy's CTO uploaded some pictures of the RocketFish-branded tablet and then tweeted them. RocketFish is BestBuy's house brand. Not much detail is available, but Engadget says that about a month ago he was talking about a tablet with a front facing camera which was running Android 2.2. Maximum PC says that there are a number of similarities between the tablet in the picture and the HP Slate. We'll just have to wait and see....

Apple Quick Notes: iPad launch, iPod Touch prototypes, iPhone Android
April 26, 2010 | 10:15 am

Steve Jobs has perpetrated another email response, saying in three letters and a period that the 3G iPad will be in Best Buy on its April 30th launch day. (If brevity is the soul of wit, Mr. Jobs must be one of the wittiest people ever.) Of course, there’s no guarantee Best Buy will have enough iPads to meet demand. My Best Buy in Springfield, Missouri got 90 wifi iPads on their launch day, and had sold all but two by the end of the day. Meanwhile, two iPod Touch prototypes sporting cameras briefly appeared on eBay....

Barnes & Noble to launch Nook advertising campaign
April 22, 2010 | 11:43 am

The Wall Street Journal reports that Barnes & Noble is launching an advertising campaign for the Nook, featuring a television commercial showing a girl reading as she grows up (as well as radio, print, and Internet ads). This will mark Barnes & Noble’s first television commercial since launching the website in 1996. Barnes & Noble seems to be shelling out some serious cash outlay on this, as the Journal article notes the TV ad will be airing during such popular fare as American Idol. The article then goes into further detail about the advertising and other...

iPad: News from the Best Buy sales floor
April 8, 2010 | 9:50 pm

best-buy-logo Spent the evening at Best Buy, alternating playing Beatles Rock Band with hanging around the iPad and Macintosh display island. I couldn’t get iBooks to open on the iPad I tried, even after resetting, though I noticed someone else had it open and was looking at it on another unit. I did play some iPad Rock Band and Plants vs. Zombies, however, as well as surfing the web from the iPad and a Mac set up on the same island, and Twittering a bit. I even moderated some TeleRead comments and spam with it! And I talked to...

Kindle, Nook enter big-box retail chains; Plastic Logic Que to ship in June
April 8, 2010 | 9:06 am

Engadget has a few interesting reports of e-book reading devices finding new sales outlets. First of all, when the iPad was announced with iBooks, people knew it was targeting Amazon’s Kindle. But now, apparently Amazon is “Targeting” its own Kindle, placing the device for sale in the Target big-box stores by the end of this month. Engadget has what seems to be a screenshot taken from a Target inventory management application to back this up. Nate the Great at The Digital Reader did a bit of sleuthing of his own, phoning his local Target to confirm that...
