Refurbished iPad Minis Once Again Available from Apple Store, Starting at $299
March 26, 2013 | 1:38 pm

iPad MiniThe iPad mini looked like a bit of a gamble for Apple at first, but you don’t get to Cupertino’s dominant position over the tablet market without taking some risks, do you? And this one seems to have paid off rather nicely, as a second-gen 7.9-incher is allegedly in the works already. Meanwhile, if you’re one of those folks living in the shadows and scouring the Internet for the best deals on the most awesome gadgets, you should know that an assortment of refurbished iPad minis are again available via Apple’s U.S. Store. The tabs are not exactly dirt-cheap, but they offer...

iPad Mini Now Shipping in Record Time; Good or Bad News for Apple?
February 5, 2013 | 3:44 pm

iPad MiniBy Adrian Diaconescu Success is very transient in the ever-changing tech world, so it’s obvious every gadget sold and penny cashed in counts. You can be on top now and then hit rock bottom the next moment, which is exactly what has happened recently with Nokia and BlackBerry. But if there’s one landmark of stability in today’s tech décor, that’s definitely Apple. The Cupertino-based giant has been on the rise for years—especially with its various iPad models—and there’s no sign of that status quo changing anytime soon. Or is there? There’s been a lot of buzz recently about how Samsung’s Galaxy S3 and other...

Apple Stores help Japanese citizens, Apple employees in aftermath of quake
March 16, 2011 | 2:19 am

I may vacillate between liking Apple’s iOS devices and disapproving of Apple’s policies, but sometimes Apple is capable of doing cool things completely unrelated to hardware and software matters. Kevin Rose has posted to his blog a couple of interesting emails from an Apple Store employee in Japan. The messages detail the heroic measures Apple took to help both the people of Japan, who relied upon the store’s open wireless hot spots (a rare thing in Japan) to message their families, and Apple’s employees (retail and corporate), who were faced with offices fifty floors up in buildings with...

ZDNet blogger predicts iPad to take over e-reader market
April 30, 2010 | 8:12 pm

David Morgenstern has an editorial on ZDNet in which he predicts a grim future for e-book device manufacturers that aren’t Apple. He notes that over the last few days, not one but two high-profile tablets have been cancelled—Microsoft’s two-screened Courier and HP’s Windows 7 slate—and he lays their cancellation squarely at the feet of the iPad. He also suggests that the three million unit guesstimate being tossed around for the Kindle device’s sales may be grossly overinflated, and it might well have sold below one million. (Though, given Amazon’s reticence to release numbers, either guess is probably equally valid.) Meanwhile,...

iPad Quick Notes: Book apps, release dates, AT&T
March 3, 2010 | 2:29 pm

Here are some quick notes about the iPad and related matters. Last month I reported on TechCrunch’s article about the highest number of paid apps in the iPhone app store being e-books. (There were still more games than e-books, but a higher percentage of them were free.) Now Matthew Ingram at GigaOm reports that for the first time, the total number of book-related apps (most of them app-books) now outnumbers the total number of games in the App Store. There are over 26,000 books, but only about 24,000 games. Some of this may have to...
