Faber iPad app brings Scots via Irish with Seamus Heaney Henryson versions
May 26, 2014 | 12:47 pm

One of the most interesting posthumous Seamus Heaney publications to appear since the great Irish poet's death has just debuted in the shape of Seamus Heaney: Five Fables, an iPad app "based on Seamus Heaney’s translations of Scottish poet Robert Henryson’s fables, recently adapted and animated for the BBC," according to the app's introduction from Northern Ireland Screen. "A partnership between Touch Press, Faber and Flickerpix, funded by Northern Ireland Screen's Ulster–Scots Broadcast Fund, the app presents an immersive, interactive experience." The app even has its own website, here. Robert Henryson was a late 15th-century Scottish poet, part of the extraordinary...

Latest UK moral panic warns: Stop infants taking the tablets
April 17, 2014 | 2:25 pm

panic.jpegiPads and tablets now appear set to join ebooks, the Internet, television, bicycles, and other agents of moral decay as hate figures in the latest press-stoked moral panic in the UK. As reported in the UK Daily Telegraph, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers has issued research claiming that tablet addiction has left a generation of manually challenged British children. The Daily Telegraph cites an ATL conference speaker who warns of "increasing numbers of young pupils who can swipe a screen but have little or no manipulative skills to play with building blocks or the like." The ATL will also apparently...

Apple Facing Retina Display Shortage, Might Have To Delay iPad Mini 2 Launch
July 15, 2013 | 2:56 pm

iPad Mini 2Since Apple’s first mid-sized, mid-range tablet has proven to be such a booming success, no one really doubted an iPad Mini 2 coming sooner or later. But the exact ETA of this new slate has always been the big question mark. (Well, that ... and the specs and the pricing, of course.) Unfortunately for us (and fortunately for the tech giant), Cupertino has managed to keep a very tight lid on iPad Mini 2-related rumors, so here we are, eight months after the first-gen’s release, with nothing of substance known about the follow-up. And by “known,” I mean intel revealed by...

How Has the Tablet Changed Your Life? Your Business? Your General Disposition?
April 17, 2013 | 2:10 pm

tabletIt's hard to believe it's already/only been three years since Apple introduced its category defining iPad. On the one hand, it seems like only yesterday. On the other hand, for those of us with tablet computers of one stripe or another, it's hard to imagine life before our new constant companions—in the same way those of us who came up before the Internet can barely remember the days before Pine. There was a great piece on Ars Technica about two weeks ago in which its editors reflected on the device, their initial impressions and its impact on their lives since. I recall my own...

Refurbished iPad Minis Once Again Available from Apple Store, Starting at $299
March 26, 2013 | 1:38 pm

iPad MiniThe iPad mini looked like a bit of a gamble for Apple at first, but you don’t get to Cupertino’s dominant position over the tablet market without taking some risks, do you? And this one seems to have paid off rather nicely, as a second-gen 7.9-incher is allegedly in the works already. Meanwhile, if you’re one of those folks living in the shadows and scouring the Internet for the best deals on the most awesome gadgets, you should know that an assortment of refurbished iPad minis are again available via Apple’s U.S. Store. The tabs are not exactly dirt-cheap, but they offer...

(Time-Limited) Deal Alert: Refurbished Apple iPad 4 With Verizon LTE Available for $500
March 18, 2013 | 5:12 pm

iPad 4There is no doubt in our minds that Apple’s fourth-generation 9.7-inch iPad is the most spectacular to date, and almost certainly the best-ever conceived tablet. The only catch is that it doesn’t exactly come cheap. At best, you can find one at $500 with 16 GB of on-board storage and Wi-Fi. If you also want 4G LTE speeds, you have to be ready to fork out roughly $120-$130 more. Then again, if you don’t need a new iPad, you can save a few bucks by choosing a refurbished model instead. Apple put a few of those up for grabs via its U.S. Store last week,...

Apple Offering Refurbished iPad 4 and iPad Mini
March 16, 2013 | 1:10 pm

iPadBeen wanting a 4th generation iPad or an iPad Mini but not ready to fork over that much money? Well, you’re in luck because Apple is now offering refurbished models of their latest releases at discounts of six to 10 percent. No, that’s not a huge savings, but with Apple products, a little is about the best you can expect. As with all refurbished options, you might not find exactly what you want available, but you’ve been patient until now, so you can probably afford to be patient and check back until your configuration is available. For example, when I checked a few...

Amazon Kindle Fire HD One-Ups iPad Retina Screen in New Ad (Video)
February 6, 2013 | 12:26 pm

Amazon Kindle Fire HD“You may not be able to tell the difference,” says the advertisement’s narrator, as both the iPad and the Kindle Fire HD sit side-by-side displaying the same images. “But your wallet definitely can.” Amazon’s new 30-second ad draws the comparison in screen resolution between the iPad and the (new, larger) Fire HD 8.9-inch screen. Visually, the Fire looks awesome. Actually, both tablet screens do. I feel that strictly based on just screen clarity, sure, either would be a sufficient choice for new tablet owners. But the Kindle Fire HD's $299 price tag sure does appear as the ‘nice price’ alongside Apple’s $499...

iPad Mini Now Shipping in Record Time; Good or Bad News for Apple?
February 5, 2013 | 3:44 pm

iPad MiniBy Adrian Diaconescu Success is very transient in the ever-changing tech world, so it’s obvious every gadget sold and penny cashed in counts. You can be on top now and then hit rock bottom the next moment, which is exactly what has happened recently with Nokia and BlackBerry. But if there’s one landmark of stability in today’s tech décor, that’s definitely Apple. The Cupertino-based giant has been on the rise for years—especially with its various iPad models—and there’s no sign of that status quo changing anytime soon. Or is there? There’s been a lot of buzz recently about how Samsung’s Galaxy S3 and other...

Tablet Usage: Size Does Matter
January 22, 2013 | 11:00 am

Until recently, I’ve been using an iPad 2 as my sole tablet. I like the iPad. I use it for four main functions: writing, browsing, video and reading. The 10-inch size is perfect for the first three, but it was a bit too large for the last. Because I also use my tablet for scheduling and task management, I tended to take it with me to networking events and client meetings. I always felt a bit silly pulling out such a large device to schedule a meeting or jot a quick note. About a week ago, I bought a Nexus 7 tablet,...

Are tablets now disposable computing devices?
January 4, 2013 | 10:00 am

By Kirk Hiner | for Technology Tell With the price of 7″ tablets now plumbing the sub-$200 level, should these entry-level units be considered disposable computing devices? ZNet’s Jason Perlow posed that question in a commentary last weekend, in which he relates an anecdote about his wife falling asleep in bed while using a Google Nexus 7 he’d recently passed on to her, dropping the tablet onto a tile floor, the impact of which shattered its glass screen. Perlow vetted out the cost of replacing the screen, discovering that ASUS charges about $170 to replace the digitizer/screen/glass assembly, and the parts for a DIY repair would cost about $140. The Nexus 7′s touch digitizer,...

Toddler vs. Tablet!
December 29, 2012 | 8:15 pm

Android mascot, LloydMy Christmas holiday week just ended. The Beloved and I took a few days off for a road trip visit with a beloved little friend, and in between the train building, Lego building, blanket-fort building and grilled-cheese sandwich excursions, Little Monkey amused himself with some gadget play. He's only two-and-a-half years old, but he's already logged some (heavily) supervised time with parental iPhones, iPads and so on. I had, in fact, loaded up my own iPad with Mr. Potato Head, Toca Band and other kid-friendly goodies just for his amusement. And ... ? Google Nexus for the win! Little Monkey spent most of his gadget time...
