UPDATE - Nate at The Digital Reader has been having problems with the Kindle for PC update and points to others reporting the same at MobileRead Forum the first days of August.  At that site, HarryT provides a link to HippoFiles' list of downloadable files for earlier versions for anyone having trouble with the latest v1.6.1 install.  [End of Update] If you've...

Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader beats Apple restrictions
August 10, 2011 | 9:41 am

That was Electricpig's headline last night, which was to the point. Kindle for Web to the RescueShould Cloud Reader be sporting a cape?  For now, it can fly only in Google Chrome browser and in Safari, but it's very slick, not faster than a speeding bullet but pretty smooth.  All my book covers showed up instantly and I could choose to download any to read offline instead of reading them online from the 'cloud.' If you're on Windows and don't have the Chrome browser yet (or if you're on a Mac and want to try Chrome), download it here and then browse...

Google gets an e-reader. What it can and can’t do
July 12, 2011 | 9:51 am

GOOGLE GETS AN E-READERThe iriver HD is the first e-reader to have the open Google eBooks platform integrated.  Target has exclusive rights to sell it for 6 months, at $139.00.  iriver details are here.  They'll be on sale July 17.The unit has a higher resolution (768 x 1024 at 213 ppi] vs the Kindle's 600 x 800 pixel resolution at 167 ppi) though I haven't read about the darkness of the font (the Nook Touch has less-dark fonts than the Kindle or even than the first Nook), but that display sounds good, and it's said to have faster page turns. However,...

Kindle news: latest Amazon tablet rumors – by August or September
June 22, 2011 | 9:57 am

It'll be fun, once Amazon tablets appear, to see which reporters had the best sources. On June 19, I noted TechnoBuffalo's Noah Kravitz writing about his own sources giving him information that conflicted with the previous strong rumors of "Hollywood" and "Coyote" code-named models that would be based, earlier reports had said, on NVIDIA processors. Not so, says Kravitz. ' My sources tell me Amazon’s tablet computer will run Android but feature Intel-based innards, and not an Nvidia Tegra processor, but what beats at the heart of Jeff Bezos’ secret creation is barely half the story...

Amazon quietly makes improvements to Kindle periodical subscription rules and processes
June 20, 2011 | 10:37 am

AMAZON IMPROVES KINDLE PERIODICAL SUBSCRIPTION RULES AND PROCESSESIn May 2009, I complained here (and in reviews) about Amazon's restrictive subscription rules for the sharing of periodical subscriptions and access to older-issues, which affected newspapers like the NYTimes Sunday editions also) when upgrading or replacing Kindles.  Older magazine subscription issues (vs single issues)that we've purchased can't be re-downloaded (the way a Kindle book can) to an upgraded or replaced Kindle if the issues are older than the last 7 issues or 14 dailies.  They can't be even  when a customer has opted to "Keep" older issues on one Kindle but  then needs to...

Changes to the “Manage Your Kindle” pages and personal document settings
June 9, 2011 | 12:05 pm

Kindle usb s REPEAT: BIG CHANGES IN THE AMAZON MANAGE YOUR KINDLE PAGES :-)Where we once had one confusing page for managing our Kindle(s), we now have a multitude of pages.  These may seem confusing also, but ultimately they're much clearer. While almost finishing a blog entry on sending personal docs or articles to the Kindle today, I found that the Manage Your Kindle pages have changed in a huge way.You can now find your Kindle Receiving-Email-Addresses (for receiving personal docs) in TWO areas: 1. at the new Manage Your Devices page in a column titled "Kindle E-Mail Address."  In order to EDIT these, you have...

Qualcomm Mirasol ereader “canned”, Qualcomm head confirms
June 2, 2011 | 9:50 am

Qualcomm boss confirms Mirasol ereader canned Pocket-Link reports that the head of Qualcomm, Paul Jacobs, has confirmed that an ereader originally scheduled for release in the first quarter this year, was cancelled as he wasn't happy with it. We know that it wasn't released, since we're already ending the 2nd quarter. They'd planned to "launch a low volume ereader product" but decided against a product they "didn't really like." The article mentions that it had been rumored that Amazon "could be on board" but most of us have seen Jeff Bezos says often that the technology wasn't ready. Now Jacobs sounds as if he's...

Amazon’s Android Tablet(s) later this year – more on the likely display
May 16, 2011 | 9:35 am

The images at the left are from the HYDIS website's "Outdoor Readability" pagefor examples of their AFFS technology's display qualities as compared with Trans-reflective TN and and Conventional TN outdoors. AFFS is HYDIS' signature TFT-LCD technology (thin-film-transistor liquid crystal displays). In 1998, FFS was patented by HYDIS and "exceeded conventional IPS (in-plane switching) technology by offering wider viewing angles and improved transmittance."  In 2003, FFS became Advanced FFS, "with a 180 degree viewing angle and authentic color." According to HYDIS, "The AFFS technology applied in VIEWIZ tablet applications ensures perfect readability in any environment, even under bright sunlight, and allows you to enjoy the entertainment longer with...

Kindle tips: the Kindle’s “real page numbers
May 2, 2011 | 9:05 am

Images Q: I don't see real page numbers in my Kindle books. Shouldn't they be there now? A: That depends on several things: 1Are you using a Kindle 3? I have no idea whether Amazon will upgrade older Kindle software for Kindle 2 and DX's to have these.  I would think they'd be included eventually.  Amazon often takes 6 months to get to the old Kindles with updated software and it's been longer than that for some changes that should have been added to the DX Graphite at least.  The Kindle 1 with its different type of screen probably would not be updated, as...
