Amazon releases Prime Instant Video app for non-Fire Android devices
September 9, 2014 | 8:54 pm

prime instantWe and Nate at The Digital Reader have previously written about a workaround for watching Android Prime Instant Video on non-Fire Android devices. Until now, it required installing the Dolphin web browser and a deprecated Flash app, then setting Amazon Streaming Video to use Flash instead of Silverlight so that it would think you were watching video from a desktop. However, now Android Authority reports that, at least for people in the US, Amazon has finally released an Amazon Prime Instant Video app for non-Fire Android devices. Of course, Amazon being Amazon, the process is still more complicated than...

Seriously Mixed Emotions About Amazon Right Now
December 18, 2013 | 12:15 pm

amazonIt's been an interesting week watching what's happening with Amazon. First there was the curious incident of the removed movie. Then Amazon turned around and eliminated the minimums for Kindle Direct Publishing electronic payments (mentioned in today's Morning Links). The "always wants to see the good in people" part of me wants to believe that the pulling of Disney content was a mistake. Trust me, I've goofed enough times with clicking the wrong button on the screen or accidentally hitting the Ctrl Key instead of Shift to know that mistakes like that can happen. The best discount is a surprise discount, and browsing Amazon this week I discovered a very special announcement:...

July 8, 2013 | 9:30 am

AmazonDan commented on my post last week about the Kindle Fire sale, asking if there really was no way to watch an Amazon Instant Video on an Android tablet (specifically a Nexus 7). I said "nope," but someone (Bree) reminded us that alternate browsers, like Dolphin, support Flash. So I went hunting. Good news: It can be done! The bare bones instructions are here, and you'll want to follow that link because it'll take you to the all-important Flash .apk file, which you'll need to download. So follow along, and I'll give you more details. Note that this method will not work with a Nook...

Amazon Reportedly Producing a “Kindle TV” Set-Top Box
May 5, 2013 | 10:00 am

AmazonBy Jeff Kleist Amazon has been making its own devices for quite a while now. From e-readers to tablets to a rumored smartphone, the company has been pretty successful in establishing its own Apple-style ecosystem. So it makes perfect sense that Amazon wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to take charge of the one device in the home that even Apple hasn’t been able to dominate—the television—with a “Kindle TV” set-top box. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, such a set-top box is actually in the works. Given that Amazon Instant Video still isn’t exactly ubiquitously supported on TVs, it makes sense that the company...
