… The US will also get the 3G-networked Daily Edition model, but Haber doesn’t have any news on a possible UK launch. He does, however, say that we “should expect more Reader models”.

Sony is also looking to bring the digital bookshop it offers Stateside to the UK, but Haber admits that introducing it in new territories is a difficult process. “Each country has different publishing rights. It’s a segmented business model. That’s why we won’t see one bookshop where you can buy all books for a while.”

The US also has Overdrive, a platform that allows e-book owners to check out digital books from libraries, but again, we in the UK are going to have to wait while Sony gets to grips with libraries, publishers and academic institutions.

Many institutions are cautious, not least because of the damage they’ve seen done to the music industry, but Haber says that lessons have been learnt. …
