We’re up and running! Please let us know about any problems in this thread

Editor’s note: I’m moving this to the top for a day or so as traffic picks up during the week and we want to get as many comments from you as possible. PB
Well, we’re up and running, but, of course, we have some problems as nothing is easy with
a complete redesign like this.
Let’s use this thread to document any problems you find so that the developers can jump on them. Praise, and complaints, can be left for later, but our readers are the best debuggers we can have, so let us know what you find wrong. Much appreciated,
Paul

I like what I’m seeing so far! The ereaders tab just needs a dash between the e and the readers to work.
One major thing I noticed is that there are 4 sets of Google ads on the main page. You wanna get that fixed pronto because it’s against Google’s TOS to have more than 3. In fact, I don’t even know how that’s possible to show 4. They usually detect it automatically and block one out. They must be from 2 different accounts or something.
Looks great! … Works great!
Congratulations Paul and Teleread team!!!
I thought that I might be annoyed by the Captcha, but it is one of those “easy to read” captchas, not the impossible-to-read variety.
Hi Paul,
It looks great. Much better than the old site. Really a fresh look.
Some comments:
- The comment header background (#x written by xxxx) overlaps the `about xxx minutes ago’.
- I miss the recent posts list that the old site had. You tend to post in bunches, or at least post them on twitter, so I usually follow one link from twitter and then look into the list of posts to see what more I want to read. That is much more efficient for me. I can see that there is not much space left for this but maybe a collapsible field would do.
- It’s nice to have the font size choice. The last time the site had quite small letters in my experience. I would suggest, however to have only A+, A- and reset buttons (and keep the choice with a cookie), rather than this long list where I can’t see at which size I am.
- Would it be possible to eliminate the captcha for `trusted’ users, for example with a cookie? E.g. after you have posted x comments?
Those particular shades of green are somewhat nauseating, but I can overlook them. What I can’t overlook is the blocks of green text. Eye-shattering and difficult to read. Please stop.
The header section between comments (grey) has a weird and strange white ‘tick’ in it and is covering the time stamp on my Mac.
How can I send a screen snap ?
I know you’ve got to make a living, but the advertising clutter is pretty intense. I prefer to read the rss feed in any case, but the ads will definitely keep me off the main site. I for one respond much better to a smaller number of high quality ads and sponsorships (I.e. The very successful example of daringfireball.net)
Otherwise a good first impression. Good jorb!
I second the header section in the comments with the tic .. it also over laps “about 13 minutes ago”. Using Firefox on a Windows 7 x64.
I also second the condensed list of comments. I scan that every time to see what areas folks are (still) commenting about.
And I miss the ads. I’m in Canada; maybe you’ve geo-d them out?
Congrats in any case. Change is good: shakes things up!
Nice update to the site! Looks great!
Love the new cleaner, more professional look. Definitely. Miss the comments and notice that the idea of forums has been dropped…pity.
Also I can’t see myself typing in the captcha thing for every post. It’s very tiresome.
The new look is very easy on the eyes and seems to load faster. Nice!
The only negative I can see is in the Comments section. The black bars with green printing you’re using to divide comments and identify the commentator are nearly impossible to read and partly cover up the time the comment was posted.
Looks nice but:
-comments are totally messed up in alignment. plus green on grey comment titles are not that clear to read, especially with the black on grey “written by” words
-I really, really like the recent posts area since you can keep track of the fascinating conversations and debates that occur in the comments on a story. please, please bring that back somehow.

Also, at least on Firefox 3.0, here in the comments section the dark gray box at the top of the comment half-way overlaps the line that says when the comment was make.
By the way, I had to cycle through six reCaptcha’s before I found one I could read.
As Doug @16 commented, the 9th Circuit EULA ruling full post is not available. From what I can tell, it turns out that *all* links to articles in the copyright section aren’t working correctly.
Howard: forums have not been dropped, just put off a bit. Getting this redesign done was pretty complicated and we decided not to make it even worse by adding forums at the same time.
They are coming, once we get all the bugs out of this iteration.
Ah ok Paul. I didn’t see any mention of it in the launch article. Good news
and I guess the registration with only one captcha
I see the grey header for comments has been changed to white. Good move. The green text colour in the blue headers is still very hard to read so I suggest the designer just lightens the green..
As most users are not familiar with markup language I believe that it would be a very nice idea to offer buttons for making text bold, italic, blockquote, indented. In the next Phase obviously
Also a preview ?
In general it’s a really clean and professional move forward. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Thanks for all the great feedback. I assure you the team at North American Publishing Company (NAPCO), TeleRead’s parent, will review each of your comments and make as many changes as possible based on your input.
Please be patient as we fix links, change font colors, enhance the comment section and implement many of your other suggestions.

I note that there is a comment in the Recent Comments by Billy:

“Why would they come out with a new product when the one they offer now is selling faster than they can make them. I doubt …”

But this comment is not under the actual article when I visit it.
Howard: interesting. Billy’s comment was held for approval, which I just did. Evidently it will show up in Recent Comments even if it hasn’t been approved. Bug.
like it all, like the font and layout — good job.
Happened again. Bob’s comment showed up on the front page before I approved it in the admin section.
Change font size script missing from front page. Could this is cookie enabled to carry it forward to all visits ?
