Some Kindle tips

John Cog has some new Kindle tips on his blog. They don’t seem to work with my Kindle 3, but might with 1 and 2. They are:
1. automatic page turning with slideshow mode
2. display the time
3. switch to a different song
4. find out how many hours you used your Kindle
Frank Sleightholme sent in the following, which he got from Paul Lemon:
I find the page turns very acceptable. I used to time my blinking when turning pages on the Bebook!! Another useful tip I have come across in recent days is to turn on the text to speech and hit the volume rocker until it goes silent and then the pages turn automatically (when the now silent voice reaches the end of the page). There are 3 speeds to the speech option so if you are a fast reader you have that option. Its great when you are eating say a sandwich in work, or you could have it in a ziplock bag and have a bath at the same time!! The possibilities are endless.

John has a Kindle 1.
On #2, displaying the time with Kindle 2, 3, and DX is done with the Menu button and looking at the top. Amazon got rid of the English version of Time, which I had liked.
However, there’s a trick to get DAY, Date and Time on the Kindle 2 and DX’s only – described at http://bit.ly/kday
That involves different ways to get it at the Home page and within a book. I have an image of the results.
Unfortunately, they took that undocumented feature out of Kindle 3 as well.
Re #5 on his blog, the GPS feature was taken out after Kindle 1 and, as he says, was not ultra reliable on the Kindle 1.
People use the silenced page turner with their exercise machines, so that still works but I’ve not played with switching songs nor looked at hours used on the Kindle.
Kindle 3 has a new feature to check how much you’ve read in the current book during the current session though. You can see it on the status line.
On Kindle 2, it is possible to get the approx lat/lon from the settings page. After writing that down on a piece of paper, you can search for it on google, thus getting a local google map. Certainly NOT convenient, but possible.
Ross, yes, though google make their maps harder to read for Kindle 2′s recently.
What we used Kindle 1′s GPS feature for was just things like finding restaurants and shops nearby. It knew where we were approximately, and you could then look up places within a mile or two.
Thanks for the catch, at my blog, that the Day, Date and Time tip no longer works for the DAY part with Kindle 2 software update 2.5.x nor with Kindle 3 as I found out yesterday.
Putting in @time and using “my items” or “search my items” will now get you unwanted search results for @time but will also give you the date as well as the time, at the top, in longer-form.
