IMG_0586.JPGHere is another Kindle case. It was kindly sent to me by the Periscope people. The folio is a bit different in two aspects. First, it really is a portfolio rather than a case. You can see that it has an insert for a pad of paper on the left and a pen holder in the center. This is a case that is meant to do more that just hold your ereader. As a result it is a bit thicker and heavier than the M-Edge or Oberon cases I reviewed earlier. The folio is very well made with extremely small stitching and all the edges are turned. I particularly like the closing which is a magnetic tab. Overall, the folio has a very professional feel. As is typical with Kindle cases, the machine is held in by 4 stretchy bands.

But the real “kicker” to the folio is the built-in booklight. You can see it nested at the center of the case. Now here is a shot with it pulled out. The light telescopes out and once it is out you can rotate the head in any direction.

Notice from the photo I took how the light is even and soft without harsh reflections on the screen. There are actually two LEDs in the light head. The light goes on automatically when it is telescoped and goes off by itself when it is returned to the docked position. It takes 3 AA batteries and a mains adapter is available as an extra.

The light is actually removable and can be used on its own or slipped into other Periscope folios. Periscope has a full line of portfolios for large and small books, pads, etc. and you can find them here. The folio is available from Amazon at $49.95.

Overall I really like the Periscope and its fit and finish make it feel quite nice in the hand. The book light is just fantastic and you can’t imagine the convenience of having it built into the case. On the con side, since it is a folio, not just a case, it is thicker and heavier than the other cases I’ve reviewed.
