According to the App Store it will be free until early 2011.
The blurb says that the app includes over 25 Times sections, including Arts, Technology, Politics, Science and Style. New sectons for photos and videos have been added, along with a selection of Times blogs.
After the app is downloaded you get access to Top News, Most E-mailed, Business Day and Video. To get access to all sections one needs to log in with an existing NY Times account or register for free from within the app.

Hmm… You can’t copy text from inside the app. Somthe only way to export info is to email it or send it to Twitter?
If you use the app to create a NYTimes account, don’t forget to THEN log in using a web browser after clicking on the link in the confirmation email to turn OFF the spam you are automatically signed up for by creating an account. Have to wonder how much spam this’ll generate for unsuspecting people.
I have had a NY Times account for years and cannot attribute any spam to it. Obviously I can’t speak for signing up via the app but don’t see why it should be any different.
the difference is that, by signing up for a NY Times account thru the iPad app, the confirmation email link that you have to use to enable the account signs you up for a NY Times ” product and services” spam mailing list. You have no choice in the matter if you want to use the app. And you can’t opt out EXCEPT by logging into your new account from a web browser. You can’t get to account info from inside the app. That’s a serious drawback.
Granted, other similar apps are stingy with account management, and do the same auto-enroll in spam lists but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.
But other than that… It is a nice app. Not sure if I’ll pay for it when they start charging for content. It’ll depend on the cost.
