National Writers Union, American Society of Journalists and Authors, Science Fiction Writers of America send letter to Congress opposing Google Book Settlement

The three organizations sent the letter to over 60 members of Congress and especially to those who are authors themselves. Interestingly, these organizations are diametrically opposed to the Authors Guild and the Association of American Authors, both of which are approving of the Settlement.

The letter begins:

You’re an author. Are your “opting in” or “opting out” of the Google Books Settlement” If you don’t know that that means – or don’t know what it means for you and your book – you’re in good company. Writers all over the country are hugely confused. This is not helped by the fact that the legally required notification that went out to affected authors was minimal. No attempt was made to locate the vast majority of authors, and the rest were sent emails. Of those, how many thought they were spam and deleted them unread?
