More details of the Asus ereader appear

The Times Online (London Times, that is) is reporting a few new details of the Asus ereader. Evidently there will be two models, low-end and high-end.
The high-end model will have a foldable spine, like a book, and will thus have a two page display and so will look like a traditional book. It will also be in color and have speakers, a webcam and a mike.
The low-end model is aiming at the 100 pound mark, which is pretty cheap, and even the high-end model will be in the lower price range. Asus is looking to introduce at least one model by the end of the year.
Well, Asus created the netbook market, let’s see how they can innovate in the ereader market. Exciting times. Thanks to Shelf Awareness for the link.

Remember that Pixel Qi has been promising a device using their screen by the end of this year? The main Pixel Qi office is also in Taiwan.
More to the point, color e-ink isn’t ready yet so either the device will just have a traditional LCD with its problems, or it will need something new to deliver color in this time frame.
Anyone remember the Asus WePC? Because, except for the claim tha it would have a colour e-ink-like screen, the description matches that of the WePC. Could it be possible that the Pixel-Qi is in this device? Well, a couple of times Mary Lou Jepsen said they would rather not add a touchscreen layer for the sake of image quality (not at the moment).
This is going to heat up ebook reader market and it has got everything which can make it a kindle (which is priced at $299) killer. This is going keep Amazon on its toes. Gear up Amazon. Its tough time ahead…
