Fictionwise starts Kindle bookstore

This is good news from Fictionwise. Even though they are owned by Barnes & Noble they are still innovating in non-B&N areas. The logo above appears on their front page.
When you go there you are told to register at their Kindle eBookstore, register your Kindle email address, browse and purchase books, in your bookshelf click Email to Kindle and the title will be uploaded to the Kindle. The directions are sort of confusing when you try to do it and you need to go to the FAQ in order to be taken through the procedure. You will have to whitelist a Fictionwise email address on your Kindle management page, as the FAQ tells you here. What the “store” does is email Mobipocket version to your Kindle, and, as the FAQ states, you will be charged by Amazon 10 cents for the transfer.
None of the Fictionwise books I’ve purchased under my Fictionwise account show up in the Kindle store. However, if you go to your Fictionwise store you will find a new button in your Bookshelf which allow you to email each book to your Kindle. When you do this you are told that Amazon will charge 15 cents for the transfer, not the 10 cents in the FAQ. It worked just fine when I tried it and it will be a great way to get my magazine subscriptions from Fictionwise to the Kindle without having to connect the Kindle to my computer. Thanks to Greg for the heads-up.

FW also is now offering over 7,000 books in Adobe ePub – but Teleread’s Kindle-centric reporting somehow missed THAT news.
There are other ebook readers out there, guys, almost all of which use ePub.
Appreciated the feedback, Kate. Give us a good link re the Adobe ePub stuff, and we can add that in the current post or do another. Paul and I aren’t omniscient, and, yes, that’s useful info. I myself own a PRS-505.
By the way, I fixed the Kindle-related FAQ link, which had expired–I hope the replacement one doesn’t.
Thanks,
David
This will be good for the format un-savy as they won’t have to worry about buying something that won’t work on their Kindle. Personally I’ll just stick with the regular FW store which has allowed you to email books to your Kindle for over a year
.
For Adobe ePub at FictionWise, select advanced search and then Formats Available -> Secure Adobe EPUB (bottom of the list). This returned 7,002 items when I tried it. These are standard secure ePubs, with AdobeID DRM.
FictionWise also has DRM-free EPUB as one of its multi-format options, an advanced search for this returned 30,775 items.
The only news is how far most ebook stores are behind Baen, again:

That page was up within a month of the Kindle 1′s release.
