EHasbrouck-Valpo-crop-small.jpgOne of our readers, Edward Hasbrouck has pointed me to an article he wrote on the Settlement. Edward runs The Practical Nomad website and is a member of the Writers Union. The article is too long to reprint (9 PDF pages) but is worth reading for anyone who is interested in the Settlement. Edward is not a lawyer, but I am and I think he had done an excellent job of summing everything up. I would strongly recommend that any of our “writer readers” take a look at this. You can find the PDF here. His concluding paragraph is:

I expect that I will either opt out or object. I have strong objections, but I don’t like having to risk being subject to the settlement if it is approved in its present form. It’s possible to object “pro se” simply by sending a letter to the court, but I’m not sure the impact of such a letter would be worth the risk of remaining in the settlement class. I can’t begin to afford to pay individual legal counsel, and I don’t yet know of any lawyer(s) willing to make the arguments above for me, or any group of authors or organization that plans to file a brief I could join that will make these arguments. I invite such writers, organizations, or counsel to get in touch.
