Britain: VAT increasing on ebooks?

According to the Bookseller, the Chancellor of the Exchequer has said that VAT will not be applied to books and other printed materials. However, the top VAT rate will increase in 2011 from 17.5% to 20% and that means that the price of ebooks and audiobooks could increase.

So instead of getting cheaper (and more environmentally friendly to boot) ebooks because of cost savings from going electronic, they’re going to cost 20% more than they otherwise would have. Good idea

The same is happening in Canada. The new Harmonized Sales Tax which comes into effect in Ontario and British Columbia next month removes from digital books the provincial sales tax exemption given to printed books.
