The $130 brand-new Nokia 770s may vanish from Woot.com within hours, so check this out now. Roger Sperberg, a TeleBlog contributor, has written many a post extolling the Nokia 770 as an e-book machine when used with FBReader. Just remember that the Web browser is slow. Buy the 770 with realistic expectations. But for $130? You probably can’t go wrong. Thanks to Chris Meadows for the tip. Specs follow.
Update, 8:50 a.m., June 16: Sure enough, the one-day deal is gone. Anyone manage to snag the 770 at $130?

I managed to get one. Looking forward to testing it out.
I picked up one of these from Woot and it arrived yesterday. I’m VERY impressed. I’ve been looking for an eReader to replace my Palm device and this is an outstanding replacement. The clarity of the screen is superb and FBReader is excellent. It’s VERY easy to just drag and drop documents to the memory chip (after you create a Books folder).
In addition, it’s a fine MP3 player (I think it actually sounds better than my iPod Nano) and surprisingly good as a movie player. Using TVersity and Canola, I’m streaming media in realtime from my Windows-based computer via WLAN.
For $130, wadda deal!
Buy.com $139.00 – I’ve been reading about a lot of problems with the screen and also White Screen of Death. If they replace them with the newer N800 that would be Excellent!
So where are you reading this information, SE? Thanks for the tip. As you can see, I’ve posted a query to see what others have encountered. David
Woot forums. Mine came from Buy.com, I’ll see how long it lasts but it doesn’t look promising from what I have been reading. I just hope it’s still under warranty when it happens, then I’ll just send it in and wait.
SE re Nokia 770: Thanks. For others, here is a pointer to a bunch of comments on the Nokia, pro and con. Check out this thread among others. As noted elsewhere, I myself have bought a 770 from Buy.com, but thanks to SE, I’ve done so with my eyes open. – David
is it still available?
Not for a couple of years now.
