Back in the early ’90s TeleRead was making the wacky suggestion that schools should provide book-optimized computers for students, or at least those who couldn’t afford them otherwise. Well, it’s happening in reality now to an extent.

“Inspired by a similar technology program being rolled out in Maine,” reports eSchool News, “Michigan lawmakers have just committed $10 million toward the first phase of a plan that would give every student in the state a portable, wireless computing device over the next three years, according to Michigan House Speaker Rick Johnson, who is spearheading the initiative.
