Got an email from Jon Noring about the new Facebook group he formed. It looks well worthwhile and I’ve joined it. We need some sort of coordinated presence so I think this is an excellent idea. Jon has been a valuable contributor to TeleRead for quite a while. Here is his description from Facebook:
The Facebook group: Digital Media Users Group (DMUG), is intended to be the first step in launching a national/international political lobbying organization to represent the interests of all digital media and Internet users.
Since the number of concerned digital media and Internet users is in the tens of millions in the U.S., and maybe a billion world-wide, the potential political lobbying power of this group is enormous, easily surpassing that of the commercial media and content producers who currently hold significant sway in the body politic.
(For further thoughts on the proposed lobbying organization, refer to: http://www.jonnoring.net/emua-proposal.html )
We envision the lobbying group to be loosely patterned after the NRA and MoveOn.org, both very effective citizen-based lobbying organizations, but fully utilizing the power of online social networking.
If you believe in:
– balanced and sane copyright laws in the digital era,
– an Internet free of undue government interference, censorship, and blind bidding to the commercial digital media producers (represented by their political lobbying organizations, such as the RIAA and MPAA),
– electronic hardware, software, and digital media free of crippling government-mandated usage controls
Then consider joining our group.
And do tell all your Facebook friends about this group. Our goal is to find a significant number of Facebook users to join this group — can we reach one million members?
If you’d like to help to promote this group, and beyond that to begin planning the lobbying organization which we hope follows on (whose name is yet to be determined), contact Jon Noring at jon@noring.name .
