My iPad will be 3 years old in April and I have no need to replace it. The battery is still good for 10 hours of reading and it still does everything I want. Constantly upgrading devices just to upgrade is a painful waste of time for me.

It’s not just tablets and mobile devices.
A neighbor of my mother’s had her desktop PC disabled by a lightning strike. The monitor and the hard drive survived but the motherboard was “fried”. Estimated repair cost? $200. The local OfficeMax has an HP desktop on sale for $247 this week.
With a lot of high volume consumer electronics (HDTVs, laptops, gaming consoles, cellphones for example) repairing a major component will be expensive enough that a new purchase simply makes more sense. And this has been true for a number of years.
It’s the nature of the beast; skilled labor is expensive.

If the disposable computing device has finally arrived, it’s about time. Who really wants to be tied into a Moore’s Law timeframe for upgrading their $1k+ device? And let’s face it, for many people their disposable computing device for some time now has been their smartphone. And yes, it’s going to be an issue for Apple to maintain that premium pricing and branding for an increasingly commoditized market segment. They should complain: they certainly did well enough out of it before the competition got tough.

Apparently, it is somewhat like tablets become disposable nowadays. There are even costs less than $200. I don’t know if this is good news since a lot of people will have the chance to own one, or a bad one since buying this low-quality stuff is such a waste of money.
