Check out Now Showing: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Americans: Exporting the Wrong PictureMartha Bayles’ article in the Washington Post on the damage that Hollywood sleaze is doing to America’s rep abroad. Maybe D.C. should stop worrying about the $8+ billon from Hollywood exports, actually a pittance compared to the costs in goodwill and national reputation. Instead Washington should treat the studios like farmers domestically and, in this case, pay them not to export. It just might be something to consider next time Hollywood moralizes about copyright, piracy and P2P. Fewer “creative incentives” might actually help us avoid a war or two against outraged Moslem fundamentalists (and, yes, Iraq is a war against a religiously oriented culture, not just an oil crusade alone).
