Rhiannon, clearly you have never worked in a school :-) It's not as easy as 'just hire some more IT people then.' Where will you get the money for that---from the speech therapy for kindergartners? From the support person for your students with special needs? From the library budget? I suspect that we are like most smaller schools in that we don't have enough work for a full-time person but we have too much to foist onto a teacher or admin. So you get an ad-hoc system with a bunch of well-meaning people doing their best...

Which goes back to my original point---we don't need more tech. We just need better content for the tech we have already, and some solutions for streamlining the management and maintenance a little. Unfortunately, the system seems to be set up to push a new product as the answer when it very seldom is.

Agreed with Frank. You need to sort out your IT department so that they work for you, not against you. Why aren't they installing the iPad updates? Why can't you get them to change the autoshutdown setting? Get some in-house IT people so you can call on them to fix problems immediately.

From your description, it appears to me that the single biggest issue that you face is that the education mission is in conflict with the IT and physical plant mission. The tail is wagging the dog.
Would you be permitted to set up a Calibre server? This could feed eBook content to all of your computing devices.
