Wise advice to Amazon from Adobe’s Bill McCoy
August 9, 2006 | 1:51 pm
By David Rothman
Bill McCoy at Adobe has just written an excellent post on Amazon’s hyperproprietary approach to e-book standards.
In a reply to Mike Banks’ TeleBlog article, Bill added his own twists, such as mention of the financial pressure on Amazon. Is trouble on Wall Street one reason for Amazon’s company-store strategy at the expense of writers and publishers? Bill also points out the harm that Amazon’s Upgrade program could do to the ecology of the e-book business.
Disagreeing with Bill, I myself think everyone would come out ahead with standards happening via OASIS rather than the IPDF. But that’s a detail in this context. I hope that Dan Rose and the rest of the crew at Amazon will heed Bill’s warning against playing monopoly.
