Paula FoxSo when a book go officially out of print—triggering the reversion of rights to the author? In the pre-E days, when consumers had trouble getting o-o-p titles, everything was more or less clear.

Now, though, with Simon & Schuster and other publishers creating digital warehouses, plenty of new questions have come up. S&S has modified its new contract to make it harder for a book to be declared o-o-p. The Authors Guild isn’t happy. I’d welcome thoughts from both writers and publishers.

See Publisher and Authors Parse a Term: Out of Print, in the New York Times. This is a sub-only link; I’ll see if I can’t find another. Photo shows novelist Paula Fox, who resold rights to Norton for six out-of-print novels—a major career boost.
