Kindle tip: pre-ordering

One of the nicest things about the Kindle is that it takes advantage of all the ecommerce applications that Amazon has built. Pre-ordering is one of them. Just like with any physical product that Amazon sells, you can pre-order an ebook and when it comes out it will appear magically on your Kindle when you turn wireless on. And if the price goes down after your pre-order you will only be charged the then-current price. This has happened to me a couple of times.
Today I read a review of Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, by N. K. Jemisin, on io9 and then checked with Amazon. It will be released on February 25, so I pre-ordered it and next month it will show up on my machine. Neat.

Barnes and Noble offers this as well for nook users. A real advantage over Sony, and even Kobo, neither of whom offer pre-orders. I can’t tell you how many books I never get back to reading because I forgot about them and didn’t pre-order. I can’t tell you – because I forget!
Amazon is the best bookseller for impulse buying by far. This from someone who buys from them all. Those free samples are great too for assuaging the urge to buy something. Kudos to Amazon.
That’s worked both ways for me on my Kindle. There have been a number of samples that caused me not to buy the book. The nook samples are SOOO short that I don’t really have that problem, they’re useless!
I wish Amazon (or maybe it’s the publishers) would do this when the ebook release is delayed. I think it’s dumb of them to do that– I’m NOT buying the hardback/trade paperback, no matter what– but if they do, they should definitely provide a Pre-Order button for the Kindle version. Otherwise folks like me will just forget to buy the book.
Amazon does offer preorders, when there’s an announced data for a book’s electronic release, for example, Game Change can be pre-ordered. There’s a few other books on my list that are not available for pre-order, and it’s unclear if they ever will come out, since only a couple of titles by that author are available online as it is.
