How to Open Nook Books in Aldiko

Like to buy books from Barnes & Noble, but you’d rather read your books in an app with more options, like Aldiko, a popular Android e-reading app? No worries. I’m going to walk you through opening Nook books in Aldiko, without removing DRM.

The process does start with downloading the book to the Nook app. Once that’s done, however, you can leave the Nook app and open Aldiko.

[1]

From the main screen, select “File,” and navigate to the Nook folder.

[2]

See it there near the bottom of the screen?

Select that, and navigate to the “Content” folder. Open it and you’ll see all the Nook books you’ve downloaded to your device.

[3]

Select the book you want to open, and you’ll be presented with the option to “Open” or “Import.” Select “Open.”

[4]

You’ll be presented with a screen to enter your username and password. The username is the name on the credit card on file with Barnes & Noble. The password is the credit card number. (You’ll pardon me if I don’t demonstrate by filling in my own information.)

[5]

Once you’ve entered the information correctly, the book will open.

[6]

You’ll then want to go back to the “Content” screen, and this time “Import” the book. That will add it to your Aldiko library. If you’d like, you can now delete the book from the Nook app. It will remain in Aldiko.

From now on, you’ll be able to just “Import” your books. Aldiko will remember your information, and you won’t need to enter it again, unless you change your credit card information on file with Barnes & Noble.

There. Easy, and now you can read your Nook books in Aldiko. All legal, and without needing to remove DRM.

Nice how-to for newbies, Juli. I would encourage TeleRead community members to suggest other topics for you, Dan and Joanna – especially those dealing with practicalities, including ones of interest to old-timers.

Juli has been reading TeleRead for years, as she mentioned during my enjoyable two-hour chat with her at Panera Bread here in Northern Virginia; and she’ll be contributing other posts. She owns an iPad, a Kindle and a Google Nexus 7 and will help track the Nook and Kobo apps, so she has the major bases covered. Oodles of e-books are in her cloud. Juli lives and breathes the stuff and cares endlessly about core issues such as DRM (even though the current post tells Nook-format users how to read “protected” books with Aldiko, she very much wishes the files weren’t DRM-tainted). Her e-booking, as I recall, goes back to the days when PDAs were the main show.

So speak up if you want something explained or other kinds of coverage! If Juli or others lack immediate answers, they have the tech and journalistic expertise to research it.

I’d welcome Juli to the TeleRead community except, as you can see, she’s already part of it. Kudos to Dan and NAPCO for running her posts!

I have a Nook HD and I love it! It was easy to understand and I love the interface. Here’s the one I have on Amazon [7]. If you’re looking for a tablet you should check it out, I think it’s very underrated.

Henry, no FBReader can not open any DRM-protected books. Sorry.

I logged into BN to verify the format of my name and which credit card I used, but continue to get incorrect name/password. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

@Holly, are you trying to open a book that you just downloaded to the Nook app or one that you had downloaded in the past? It’s possible you’re trying to open a book that had been coded with a different credit card number. Try importing again with a fresh download.

Also, are you using your name (as shown on your credit card) or your username? You must use the credit card name, not your username.

Those are the two most common mistakes people make. If neither of those fix the problem, email me at [8], and we’ll see if we can’t figure it out.
